Two Micks in Zone 5 Semi Final

Saturday and Sunday 23/24 February was a weekend of Zone 5 Pairs competition.  Best result by far was Mick Spong and Mick Armstrong reaching the semi finals of the Zone Pairs.   To reach the semi finals they had to play three matches over the weekend, winning the first two quite comfortably before winning in the quarter finals by one shot.  The semi finals and finals will be played at Picton Bowling Club next weekend and we will keep our fingers crossed that they win the final.  Best of luck.

Other players on the open pairs were Josh Woodcock and Dugald Braithwaite who after a bye in the first round won 27-11 before losing in the round of 16 by one shot.  Oscar Wahlin and Dave Coltman lost in the first round while Carl Spilker and Nathan Boyers also lost their first game.  The Zone Senior Pairs was held at Bowral Bowling Club.  Bowral had only one team in this competition, Noel Fraser and Jim Neely.  Unfortunately they lost in the first round by 20-10.

Sunday also saw one Bowral Bowling Club Championship Singles match.  This was between Bob Crowley and Oscar Wahlin.  This seemed to be a close match.  When I have a final score I will let you know.

Thanks once again thanks are due to Bowls Secretary Dan Ticehurst and Zone representitive Stephen Della who gave up their weekend to ensure the smooth running  of the Zone event.  Also Bob Edwards on Sunday afternoon who helped Dan with teachers from Oxley school who had an afternoon of barefoot bowling.

Weekend 16/17 February

Saturday there were three pennant trial games and one of social bowls.  In the social game there was a close tussle between John Cummings, Joel Hunt and Rick Reynolds playing Kevin Jones, Billy Dodwell and Barry Werfel.  Barry’s team came out on top at 18-15.  The first pennant trial was David Coltman, Ashley Lewis, Nathan Boyers and Mick Spong against Noel Fraser, Jim Neely, Carl Spilker and Dugald Braithwaite .  The Dugald team had a comfortablw win at 30-8.  Peter Watson, Oscar Whelan, Don Coleman and Don Chapman played Alister McGhee, Gordon Lewis, Clive Neutze and Robin Staples.  The Staples team had the initial lead helped by some good lead bowls by Alister.  Around halway the tables swung with Oscar delivering some great bowls  Don’s team lead 20-13 before a late fight back by Robin’s team, but not enough to catch  Don’s team who won 22-19.  Finally Glen Geise, Richard Denman, Mick Flynn and Peter Morales played Bob Crowley, Graham Hunt, Billy Meredith and Bob Edwards.  Having played for ten weeks on the synthetic green, many players found the adjustment to a slower grass quite difficult.  Bob’s team with 20 defeated Peter on 16.

Sunday was the first full round of the Club championship Singles.  Paul Leverett forfeited allowing Bob Crowley to advance.  Jim Neely had a comfortable win over Rick Reynolds.  Stephen Della advanced beating Bob Edwards.  Dugald Braithwaite was too strong for David Coltman. Dugald played very consistent and tight bowls winning ends of 4,3,4,3 and 2 in the mid section of the match.  Oscar Whelan had a good win over Clive Neutze.  Oscar played a very good game and will give some of the fancied players a good run for their money.  Carl Spilker beat Mick Flynn by 31-11.  Dennis Beatty also had a win.  Playing against Josh Woodcock Dennis won five straight ends to go 5 shots up after 15 ends.  He increased this lead to 10 shots after 25 ends.  Josh was unable to close the gap with Dennis winning 31-20.  Finally in the closest game of the day Noel Fraser had a well desereved win over Ashley Lewis, 31-28.  Noel lead throughout the game drawing out to a 10 shot lead after 24 ends. But you never count Ashley out and he won 7 ends to close the gap to 1 shot.  However, Noel held his nerve and finished winning the last two ends to win.  The next round draw will be posted on the notice board but may be delayed by Zone commitments.

I will post the pennant draw for our two teams below, but you will also find it in the “Pennants” section.  The singles draw also, and this is in “draws and results”.

Finally Stephen Della accepted a cheque from Roz Benton for cancer research being the money raised the previous week at the Chris Benton Memorial Day.  I believe the figure was $808.35.

Chris Benton Memorial Day

Saturday 9th February was the day that the Chris Benton Memorial Trophy was held.  It was lovely to see Roz Benton and Kendall Benton present and presenting the prizes.  Thanks to a lot of hard work by Bowls Secretary Dan Ticehurst and the Men’s Club we managed to field ten teams of fours.  The bowls started with a “spider” which raised $125 for research into cancer.  Winner of the spider was Clive Neutze.  The competition consisted of two games of ten ends.  Rather surprisingly the winner was easy to declare as only one team won both games.  The winning team was Joel Hunt, Barry Werfel, Richard Denman and Carl Spilker.  Well done to those players and thanks for everyone who turned up.  Thanks to your participation $808.30 was raised for research into cancer.  Results are also posted below.

Sunday 10th February was the first round of the Club Championship Singles competition.  Four matches were scheduled for play.  Kevin Jones forfeited so Noel Fraser moved ahead.  Stephen Della defeated Nathan Boyers by 31-12.  I gather Stephen got away to a fast start and Nathan was unable to catch up.  Carl Spilker defeated Gordon Lewis by a similar score, 31-12.  Peter Watson was a little closer to Oscar Whelan but Oscar won 31-16.  Next Sunday  will see the round of sixteen played.  There are likely to be some very good matches played, well worth a visit to the Club to watch.

Weekend 2 & 3rd Update

Further to the last post here is the updated news of this last weekend.

Zone 5 Fours competition was held over the weekend with Bowral Bowling Club fielding two teams.  Both teams played at Lawson Bowling Club.  The team of Noel Fraser, Carl Spilker, Nathan Boyers and Dugald Braithwaite won their first match 25-16, but lost the afternoon game by 26-13.  The other team fared better. The team was Stephen Della, Josh Woodcock, Mick Spong and Mick Armstrong.  They won both their matches on Saturday, 23-12 in the morning and 20-18 in th eafternoon.  This took them to the quarter final played on Sunday morning.  Again they won by a fairly close margin of 21-19.  Sunday afternoon was the semi final and their run ended there with a 21-10 loss.  A excellent effort all round.

I promised results of the pennant trial matches on Saturday.  A couple of changes to the teams listed.

Bob Crowley, Richard Denman, Peter Morales and Mick Flynn won 31-11 over Glen Geise, Graham Hunt, Don Coleman and Dan Ticehurst.

Rick Reynolds Owen Williams, Billy Meredith and Robin Staples won 22-16 over Daniel Lewis, Brian Payne, Gordon Lewis and Bob Edwards.

The annual visit of bowlers from Camberra took place on Sunday.  I believe Canberra had 42 bowlers with a few Bowral men and ladies to made up the number.  It was lovely to see a full green of bowlers.  Everybody seemed to be having an enjoyable game.  Photo below.

Weekend 2nd /3rd February

A reminder that next Saturday 9th February is the Chris Benton Memorial Day Trophy event.  There is still plenty of room for extra teams so you are encouraged a gather a team of four players and enter. The day starts at 1.00pm.

This weekend there is a Pennant trial for the garde 7 side.  Very sad to announce that the selectors have decided that there are only sufficient names on the board to enter two teams instead of the usual three.  A rather sad day for the Bowral Bowling Club.  Teams for the trial are;

D Lewis, O Whalan, G Lewis and skip B Edwqards

P Watson, O Williams, W Meredith and skip R Staples

G Giese, G Hunt, D Coleman and skip M Holmewood

B Crowley, R Reynolds, P Morales and skip M Flynn.

Will let you have the results next week.

The draw for the Club Championship Singles has been placed on the notice board.  The draw will appear in the “draws and Results” section shortly.  For you information my copy is attached below.  Please note the copy on the board is the official copy.  Also posting the notes from the draw regarding conditions of play and the schedule for the first two weeks of play.

Bowral v Austral Result

Here is the result from the Grade 2 pennant trial between Austral BC and Bowral BC held on Sunday 20th January 2019.

I am pleased to report Bowral won this trial by 58 shot to 50.

Do not have individual scores but Mick Spong’s team must have had a substantial win as Mick Armstrong’s team drew and Dugald Braithwaite’s team lost.  Well done Bowral.
