SOCIAL BOWLS SATURDAY 26th NOVEMBER
Just a quick report on the social bowls which took place last Saturday. Eighteen keen bowlers turned out on what was a very pleasant day. It was great to see Julie Hayden again amongst the numbers; always great to see some of the women joining the men on Wednesday or Saturday.
In a pairs game on rink 7, Peter Cornwell and Andy Connor took on Graham Hartnup and Ian Crowe. In the end this turned out to be a fairly one sided game with Peter and Andy winning twelve of the twenty completed ends. The final score was 22 – 10 in their favour.
In another pairs match, Mike Holmwood and Robin Staples went up against Steve Della and the current Club Men’s Singles champion Dugald Braithwaite. In this game also there was a wide gap on the scorecard. Steve and Dugald won fourteen of the twenty-one ends and ran out comfortable winners by 33 – 12.
In the last of the pairs matches, Peter Morales and Steve Day went head to head against Barry Werfel and Keith Edwards. And yet again there was a wide margin on the scorecard! Winning thirteen of the ends, Peter and Steve streeted their opponents to win 21 – 9.
The final game was a triples match on rink 10. Owen Williams, Bob Edwards and Dave Coltman battled it out against Tony Oakes, Don Coleman and skipper Julie Hayden. Julie and her team were very strong at the beginning and led 13 – 5 after nine ends. They extended their lead to 10 shots after fifteen ends and were clearly in the box seat. It was then that Dave and his team strung together five ends on the trot and cut the lead back to two with one end remaining. Team Hayden held their nerve to take a shot on the last end and victory 20 – 17.
