WEEKEND BOWLING MARCH 11th & 12th

Pennants Action

Saturday saw both the Grade Two and Grade Six Pennants teams in action. The Grade Two bowlers ventured to Glenbrook where they took on the locals. The results were as follows:

Al McGhee, Jim Neeley, Carl Spilker, Nathan Boyers 13 Vs Glenbrook 21

Stephen Della, Steven Goddard, Mick Spong, Mick Armstrong 17 Vs Glenbrook 23

Ash Lewis, Terry Butt, Kevin Stafford, Mick Anderson 18 Vs Glenbrook 20

Unfortunately, Bowral gained no points from this match and now trail the field in the Grade Two competition. The team plays Penrith this coming weekend and we’re all hopeful that the boys can come away with a win and begin their comeback.

The Grade Six team played host to Picton and the action took place on rinks 8, 9 and 10 of the Waratah Green.

Reta South, Terry Norwood, Clive Neutze Bob Crowley         22   Vs   Picton 14

Noel Fraser, Peter Cornwell, Graham Hunt, Dave Coltman   12   Vs   Picton 26

Gordon Lewis, Ian Crow, Gail Fraser, Tony Oakes                   10   Vs   Picton 20

Bowral gained one of the ten competition points on offer and so has two points from a possible thirty from the first three matches of the season. Because of a bye next Saturday, the sides will have practise games and, hopefully, can iron out a few of the kinks in their game.

MEN’S MAJOR TRIPLES CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL

Sunday saw the the staging of the final of the Men’s Major Triples Championship. Rink 8 of the Waratah Green was the venue, and a pleasant day greeted the  bowlers. A gentle breeze gusted between north-east and south-east, just strong enough to have the bowlers keeping it in mind. Stephen Della, Steven Goddard and Dugald Braithwaite took on Mick Anderson, Carl Spilker and Nathan Boyers in this battle of the Bowral Bulls!

Both teams got on the scorecard early for the match to be 2 – 2 after three ends. This was, however, as close as the teams were going to be. Although ends were tight and scoring low, Dugald and the Steves won five of the next seven ends and advanced the score-line to 10 – 4. They further asserted their authority by winning the next nine ends on the trot so that after nineteen ends they held a commanding lead of 22 – 4. In this twenty-five end match, a score-line like that looked to be all-but. To their great credit though, Mick, Carl and Nathan dug deeply into their fighting qualities and came up with gold. A full house of six shots on the twentieth end, followed by a five and two twos saw that they were then in touch at 23 – 19 with one end to play. On the last end with calm heads prevailing, the Steves and Dugald got shots in the head which left opposing skipper Nathan with little alternative but to attempt to kill the end. Unfortunately for him, his weighted shots were wide, and Dugald and the Steves took three shots to win the match 26 – 19. Congratulations to the victors who played high standard bowls throughout the game, and congratulations also to the runners-up for their spirited fightback when under enormous pressure. The match made excellent viewing.

The victors, Steven Goddard, Stephen Della and Dugald Braithwaite!

The vanquished, Mick Anderson, Carl Spilker and Nathan Boyers!
