BOWLING SATURDAY MARCH 18th   (Terry Norwood reporting)

Pennants

Saturday saw the Bowral’s Grade Two pennants team travel to Penrith where they hoped to inject some life into their pennants season. Unfortunately for the Bulls, the Penrith team proved to be too strong on the day, and the local club won all three matches to take all ten competition points. The results of each of the matches were:

Penrith   26   Vs   Alastair McGhee, Jim Neely, Carl Spilker, Nathan Boyers   11

Penrith   19   Vs   Stephen Della, Steven Goddard, Mick Spong, Mick Armstrong   16

Penrith   25   Vs   Ash Lewis, Terry Butt, Kevin Stafford, Mick Anderson   17

This result has Bowral trailing the other teams in the competition, but, hopefully, the boys will hit their straps in the very near future and give the other sides plenty to think about as the weeks roll on.

With the Grade Six pennants team having a bye, a trial game was organised amongst available grade six bowlers and reserves. On the Waratah Green, Noel Fraser, Arnold Lenczuk, Ian Crow and skipper Tony Oakes took on Reta South, Richard Denman, Terry Norwood and skipper Gail Fraser. Gail’s team had much the better of the encounter, winning twelve of the sixteen ends. There were some very tight heads and plenty of fine bowling. All bowlers had their inspired moments, but, as lead, Reta was on the jack most of the day and Gail was deadly as she drew shots consistently.

Four social bowlers also turned up on Saturday for a hit-out, and, despite the heat seemed to enjoy sparing against each other. Graham Hartnup, Graham Denman, Barry Werfel and Rick Reynolds all seemed to roll down some handy bowls from time to time.

BOWLING SUNDAY MARCH 19th

On Sunday, Bowral hosted both morning and afternoon matches of the Zone 5 Reserve Singles competition. With Stephen Della as umpire, Bowral members helped out as markers for the morning games. No Bowral bowlers were engaged in these Reserve Singles games as they were entered in the either the Senior Singles or State Singles at other venues.

Senior Singles Championship

Unfortunately for our Bowral bowlers, two were eliminated in the first round of matches, and two in the second round after byes in the first round.

Dave Coltman     18   Vs   John Roach (Austral)   25

Ash Lewis             17   Vs   Paul Faorlin (Blacktown)   25

Bob Crowley        20   Vs   John Roach  (Austral)   25

Kevin Stafford     15    Vs   Gary Trick  (Campbelltown)   25

State Singles Championship

Bowral had six bowlers entered in the State Singles, and all had byes in the first round so didn’t get onto the green until 1.00pm. Unfortunately (fortunately?), two matches in the second round saw four of our bowlers face off against each other, two guaranteed to go through.

Dugald Braithwaite   25   Vs   Terry Butt               12

Mick Anderson           25   Vs   Alastair McGhee   14

Carl Spilker                  14   Vs   Luke Fleming (Austral)  25

Nathan Boyers             11   Vs   Julian Richards (Austral)  25

With these wins under their belts, Dugald Braithwaite and Mick Anderson will move into the third round next weekend.

Dugald Braithwaite and Mick Anderson winners on Sunday!
