MEN’S BOWLS CLUB NEWS MAY 8th    (Terry Norwood reporting)

Beginning with some information:

  1. At its last meeting, the Men’s Bowls Committee decided that the AGM of the committee will be brought forward to fit in with the Bowls NSW calendar. The next AGM will now be held on Sunday 2nd July with the nominations closing on Sunday the 4th of June. Voting, if required for contested positions, will be conducted from June 20th until 5pm July 1st. All bowlers are urged to give consideration to nominating for any of the positions and so help out with the work-load.
  2. It was also resolved at the last Committee meeting that a presentation dinner night would be staged. This will be held on Saturday July 15th commencing at 6.30. This will be a partners night and the women bowlers will also be invited. So Saturday July 15th is a date for the diaries.
  3. The Board of the Bowral Bowling Club has decided to offer a reduction in membership renewal fees to members who complete their renewal by June 30th. The fee will be $120 until June 30th, and the usual $160 after that date.
  4. Zone 5 will be holding a men only Pennants competition this year in August/September. Bowral will enter teams should there be sufficient interest. The nomination sheet will be placed on the notice board shortly to gauge interest.

Pennants Bowling

Grade Two

The Grade Two pennants team travelled to Austral on Saturday for round 10 of the competition. Unfortunately for the Bowral Bulls, the Austral team came out breathing fire and dominated the encounter. Bowral could manage only half a point for drawing one of the matches and the Austral bowlers took 9.5 from the encounter. This result means that the washed-out match between Penrith and Bowral will now need to be staged because either Penrith or Austral could now take out the championship. Playing this deferred match will also give Bowral the opportunity to move into 4th position ahead of St Marys. The results of the individual matches between Bowral and Austral were:

Arnold Lenczuk, Jim Neely, Stephen Della, Kevin Stafford    18    Vs    Austral    18

Terry Butt, Scott Kennon, Carl Spilker, Nathan Boyers           13    Vs    Austral    23

Gordon Lewis, Steven Goddard, Mick Armstrong, Mick Spong    7    Vs    Austral    36

Grade Six

The Grade Six team was host on Saturday to the Campbelltown Ghosts for the final round of the pennants competition. The Grade Six bowlers were eager to snatch a win and keep alive the hope of finishing 4th overall. However, although the Sixers did win the match, they finished in fifth position because Robertson were awarded five competition points for a washed-out game and so escaped the wooden spoon. It was a good day for the Bowral team as they won one game and finished well ahead of Campbelltown on the overall score at 73 – 54.

On rink 8, Noel Fraser, Ted McPhee, Dave Coltman and skipper Alastair McGhee had a huge win over their Campbelltown rivals. Although Campbelltown took a shot on the first end, they managed to win only four more ends. The Bowral four were totally dominant as they bulldozed their way to a 36 – 7 victory. All bowled well and each of them out-bowled their opponent. This was a great way to round off the competition for this persistent side.

Both Noel Fraser and Alastair McGhee were in fine touch!

On rink 9, Graham Hunt, Ian Crow, Gail Fraser and skipper Tony Oakes battled it out against a very steady Campbelltown four. Bowral started disastrously dropping eight shots on the first two ends and by the ninth end were really under the pump at 5 – 15 down. However, to their credit they held their own and matched the opposition in the second half of the game. Unfortunately the large deficit of the first half was too much to overcome and Campbelltown took out the match 23 – 14.

None tried harder than Graham Hunt and Gail Fraser!

In the final game on rink 10, Reta South, Terry Norwood, Chris Forrester and skipper Bob Crowley went head to head against a very classy Campbelltown four. Campbelltown was totally dominant at the start winning eight of the first nine ends and leading 18 – 1. Completely out-bowled up to that point, the Bowral four finally clicked into gear and set about a recovery. Bowral won nine of the next ten ends and led by three shots with two ends remaining. Unfortunately for Bowral, they ran out of form and, in conceding four shots, went down 24 – 23!

Bob Crowley led the side inspirationally all season!
