BOWLING INFORMATION JUNE 3rd    (Terry Norwood reporting)

A few reminders to begin with:

  1. AGM nominations close on Sunday June 4th with the meeting itself to be held on Sunday July 2nd. So members, there is still time to nominate for any of the positions.
  2. The Awards Presentation night being planned by the Men’s and Women’s Bowling Committees will be staged on Saturday July 15th. The Men’s Committee will be presenting badges to all the competition winners for the previous twelve months. This will be a partners night and should be a great social event. One to scratch down in the diary fellows.
  3. Nomination for the Men only pennant competition in Aug/Sep is still open. The word from zone is now that this is likely to be an eight bowler per side competition. This will be a 6 round competition spread over eight weeks so anyone interested still has time to nominate.
  4. Quite a few men have nominated for the mixed triples being organised by the Women’s Committee in July. There is still time to enter if you are interested fellows.

Social Bowls Saturday June 3rd

Fourteen bowlers decided to enjoy the sunshine on a glorious June afternoon. Given the numbers, it was decided to run two pairs matches and one triples.

In the triples game, Jill Hardwood, Ian Crow and skipper Gordon Lewis took on Keith Edwards, Jim Starkey and Mick Flynn. Mick’ team got the better of the opening and led 9 – 4 after five ends. However, when they conceded an embarrassing 6 on the eleventh end, the two sides were locked at 13 all. Team Lewis edged to the front but conceded a five on the fifteenth end to slip behind again. The teams were locked with three ends to play but a four put Mick’s team in front and they held on to win 25 – 23 in a tight one.

On rink 9, Graham Hunt and Chris Forrester battled against Peter Cornwell and Bob Edwards. In a scintillating opening Chris and Graham burst to a lead of 11 – 1. Anyone else would have been reaching for the oxygen but that wily Bob remained calm. He and Peter found their touch and by the tenth end trailed by one one shot. Graham and Chris then had a solid patch and extended their lead to 20 -13 on the sixteenth end. Peter and Bob then dominated the game taking the remaining ends and winning another close one 22 – 20. Nevr count Bob Edwards out!

In the other pairs game Arnold Lenczuk and Kevin Stafford took on Terry Norwood and Steven Goddard. And what another cracking game this was! Kevin and Arnold, bowling excellently, totally dominated the opening leading 10 – 0 after four ends and had their opponents reeling. Steven and Terry finally got on the score-card but were trailing badly at 4 – 16 after ten ends. Then, finding better form, team Goddard began to work their way back into the match and with a five on the seventeenth end trailed by only three. They continued to get the better of their opponents over the closing ends and went on to win 24 – 22 in yet another close one.
