Social Bowls Wednesday

Thirty-six very keen bowlers turned out for a game of social bowls on what was a splendid August afternoon. New-comer Shane Harvey was amongst the number for his second game, and regular visitor Russell Dunstan also turned out. Given the numbers, the Match Committee decided to run six games of triples with the venue being the Wilson Green.

On rink 1, Arnold Lenczuk, Viv Gear and skipper that wily leftie Clive Neutze took on Wal Markow, Neville Tanner and ‘the miracle man’ Peter Morales. And what a cracker game this was! Clive’s team got off to a flying start winning four of the first five ends to lead 9 – 2. However, in his usual way Peter had his team back on even terms by the seventh and in the lead shortly after. In a really close tussle, the scores were still locked on the thirteenth and again on the sixteenth. Peter’s team then edged to a three shot lead only to have Clive and his boys grab four shots on the last two ends to get home 21 – 20. In a great game, none bowled better than Wal Markow as lead for Peter although Arnold matched him in the latter stages. And this group won the jackpot to round off a great day for them!

Bad back and all, Wal Markow had a blinder!

On rink 2, Graham Hunt, Joe O’Donnell and skipper ‘Bundy Boy’ Steve Day battled against Ian Duncan, Terry Norwood and another wily leftie Mick Flynn. With Ian hugging the jack, Mick’s team were right on form at the start winning five of the first seven ends and looking good at 8 – 2. Steve’s team then found slightly better form but were still five shots down after ten ends. Graham Hunt then hit top form and transformed the game. With ‘toucher’ Graham never off the jack, team Day stormed ahead leaving their opponents languishing in their wake! They won eight of the last eleven ends to blitz the opposition and finish with a comfortable win at 21 – 15. Anyone taking on Graham Hunt at the moment needs to wary … he’s in red hot form!

Absolutely red hot, Graham Hunt could take on anyone at present!

On the next rink, Col Stone, Keith Scriven and ‘skip’ Tony Oakes were up against Jill Harwood, Ian ‘Mr Cros’ Crow and Skipper Steven Goddard (great to have you back Steve). With plenty of chat, Tony had his team on task early winning six of the first eight ends and leading by 9 – 5. Steven’s team then won a couple of ends to close the gap to a single shot at the halfway point of the game. Tony’s team then won four of the next seven ends to lead 19 – 12 on the seventeenth. Far from done and with Steven firing in some deadly bowls as skipper, team Goddard began to edge their way forward. They won the 18th, 19th then the 20th ends to be within reach at four shots down. In a final gasp, they won the last but managed only two shots; Tony’s team hung on to win 19 – 17 in a beauty!

Keith Scriven gave skip Tony good support!

On rink 4, Barry Werfel, Joel Hunt and ‘Mr Unflappable’ Chris Forrester took on Ken Looke, Owen Williams and the tenacious Gordon Lewis. In a red-hot opening, Gordon led his team to a stunning 9 – 1 lead after the first five ends but Chris refusing the offer of oxygen. And for good reason, because team Forrester steadied winning the next five ends and it was game on at 9 – 7 to Gordon. Team Lewis then had the better of the next couple of ends, but by the seventeenth end the teams were locked at 13 all. Two ends later they were still locked and then drama hit on the twentieth. With Chris’ team all over the place, Gordon’s team scored an astonishing six shots and were suddenly six ahead with one to play! Chris’ team took the last end but it was team Lewis that prevailed at 22 – 18. Ouch, six shots!

Looke, Williams, Lewis snatched six shots on the twentieth end!

In another triples game on rink 5, Shane Harvey, Ted McPhee and ‘the maestro’ Robin Staples battled it out against Brian Bailey, Russell Dunstan and the imperturbable Mike Holmewood. Robin and his men made an excellent start to lead 5 – 0 after four ends. Mike then stirred his team into action and by the eighth end had levelled the scores at 7 apiece. This match continued to be very tight with the scores level on the thirteenth and again on the sixteenth at 13 – 13. Mike’s team then hit a purple patch to push out to a lead of 20 -13 with two ends to play. Robin’s team the scored four to be three behind with one end remaining. And then the drama struck! Four shots down in the head and with his last bowl to play, Mike rolled the shot of the day to take one and the match! Terrific stuff!

At the request of the old gentlemen, the customary 18-ender was played on the Waratah Green and saw Keith Edwards, John Fleming and ‘Junior’ John Cummins up against Bill ‘the’ Pope, Bill Meredith and ‘rowdy’ Paul Rubie. Although the report was that the bowling wasn’t all that good, the scores were close and this made for an interesting match. So close were the scores that after twelve ends the teams were level at 11 – 11. It was then that John’s team seemed to show their ages and ran out of steam. Team Rubie took control winning four of the last five ends to run out fairly comfortable winners at 19 – 13. And, as usual, one of these gentlemen managed to take out one of the three prizes in the after bowls raffle!

Steady Skipper Paul Rubie didn’t run out of gas!
