Social Bowls Saturday 9th
Twenty bowlers listed their names for social bowls on what was a pleasant day to be on the green. Play was assigned to the Waratah Green and, given the numbers, two games of pairs were organised and two games of triples.
On rink 7 Scott Kennon, Alistair McGhee and Stephen Della took on Terry Butt, Bob Crowley and Ash Lewis in a game of ‘shifting’ triples where each player takes on the position of lead, second and skip for a third of the match. This is an interesting way of developing experience and tactical thinking as bowlers switch roles. For the ‘record’, TBA finished in front of SAS 33 – 11. Details are sketchy but the rumour is that the big bloke had a good day!
In the other triples game on rink 8, Alex Crowther, Peter Cornwell and the ‘unflappable’ Gordon Lewis played Graham Hunt, Richard Denman and Tony ‘sparks’ Oakes. Quite surprisingly, this turned out to be a match of two completely different halves. Gordon’s team dominated the first half to lead 14 – 3 after nine ends. In fact, they led 15 – 6 after twelve ends but at this point the wheels fell completely off the Lewis jalopy! Team Oakes won the last nine ends and stormed home to a 27 – 15 victory! Oh ouch!
In a pairs game on rink 9, Keith Edwards and Mick Flynn took on Terry Norwood and Arnold Lenczuk. Arnold and Terry roared out of the blocks to lead 18 – 2 after eight ends. However, three ends later they’d had the smiles wiped off their faces as the lead had been reduced to 18 – 15!! They the steadied the ship however, and had the better of the second half of the game to run out winners 28 -20. Arny got some really good bowls in at crucial times.
In the other pairs game on rink 10, Barry Werfel and Robin Staples played Graham Denman and Ian ‘the’ Crow. Both teams got on the scorecard early for Robin’s team to lead 5 – 4 after five ends. Five ends later they still led by a shot at 8 – 7, but then they started to really get the better of their opponents. In the back half of the game Barry and Robin conceded only four shots as they added plenty of their own, going on to a final score of 24 – 13.
