BBC BROADCAST SATURDAY OCTOBER 14th (Terry Norwood at the desk)
A few bits of information for a start:
- A couple of bowlers have asked for these reports to be printed off and posted on the notice board. I’ll see what I can do but no luck so far.
- Bowlers are reminded of the BBQ to follow bowls on Wednesday next October 18th.
- The mixed pairs competition will commence on Sunday October 22nd with the staging of round 1. This will be followed by round 2 on Sunday 29th.
- The new shade cloth has been installed around the Wilson and Waratah Greens. Bowlers are reminded that whoever rolls the cloth out is responsible for rolling it back again. This will help with its maintenance and lifespan.
- Anyone interested in the progressive totals (July to September) for participation in bowls (social, competition and pennants) at Bowral Bowling Club can find the figures posted on the notice board. Several bowlers have made more than twenty appearances and so are well on the way to the target of 50 in the bowls year 23/24 which would make them eligible for the waiving of green fees.
Social Bowls Saturday 14th
Saturday presented as a clear, sunny day but the strong wind blowing out of NW to SW gave the bowlers plenty to take into account. Twenty bowlers turned out so the Match Committee opted for two games of pairs and two of triples. With the Wilson Green still out of commission, play was assigned to the Waratah Green.
In the pairs match on rink 8, Graham Hartnup and Mick ‘potters’ Flynn took on Harold Wall and ‘gentleman’ Jim Starkey. Both teams got onto the scorecard early but by the tenth end Mick and Graham had developed a handy 13 – 6 lead. However, the next end took their breath away when Jim and Harold scalded them with a six and moved to within a shot. But this was a one-off as Mick’s team regained control to win eight of the remaining ten ends and take out the victory at 23 – 18.
In the other pairs match on rink 11, the Denman brothers Grahame and Richard battled against Keith Edwards and Ian ‘the’ Crow. Again, both teams got onto the scorecard early, but it was the Denmans who had much the better of the first half of the game to lead 10 – 5. However, the game was then flipped on its head as Keith and Ian began to consistently out-bowl their opponents. In fact, they won six of the last seven ends to swamp the Denmans and run out winners at 16 – 12.
In a triples match on rink 9, Peter ‘ricochet’ Cornwell, Peter ‘Virgin’ Flight and skipper Steven Goddard took on Ian Duncan, Arny ‘black foot’ Lenczuk and Dave Coltman. Now, this was one of those matches that the Match Committee thought would be a close one, but it wasn’t! Steven’s team dominated the scoring winning sixteen of the twenty-one ends. They led 16 – 2 at the halfway stage and went on to victory by 24 – 12. It was one of those days when the roll of the bowl seemed to go only one way.
In the final match, Graham ‘grouper’ Hunt, Neville Tanner and Robin ‘maestro’ Staples took on Ted ‘Mr Ed’ McPhee, Terry Norwood and Gordon ‘cobbler’ Lewis. With Graham leading particularly well, Robin’s team had the early advantage and led 10 – 5 after seven ends. However, Gordon then hit top form and by the eleventh end had his team in front 14 – 10. With Ted then leading well, Gordon’s team pushed on and led 21 – 11 after sixteen. Team Staples battled hard to keep the game alive but to no avail. Victory went to the ‘cobbler’s’ team by 25 – 18.
