BBC BROADCAST WEEKEND 28/29th OCTOBER

BBC BROADCAST SATURDAY/SUNDAY 28/29th OCTOBER     (Terry Norwood at the desk)

Some points of info to begin with:

  1. The system of bowlers and spectators using the black garbage bins rather than the blue plastic rink markers to take their rubbish seems to be working well. This is making the Match Committee’s task easier so let’s keep that going.
  2. As long as bowlers are reading these postings in the printed form on the notice board, we’ll keep putting them up.
  3. The sheet with the latest numbers for participation in bowls, July – October, will be posted on the board on Wednesday. Remember, anyone who reaches fifty appearances at the Bowral Club in social and competition bowls in the financial year (July 23 – June 24) will be eligible to participate in social bowls free of green fees for the remainder of that year. To date, ten bowlers have made 25 or more appearances and so are well on their way.
  4. The Bowls Secretary, Kev Stafford, is now calling for entries into the Club Fours and Triples competitions which will be staged in late November/early December. A condition of entry is that no team in either event may include more than two top grade players male or female.  The purpose of this is to spread the talent and attempt to achieve a more even competition. So bowlers, organise your teams and get them listed on the sheets on the men’s notice board.

Zone 5 Bowls

On Sunday, the Bowral team of Stephen Della, Nathan Boyers, Mick Spong and Mick Armstrong played their Zone Fours competition match against Bargo. They came away with a very impressive victory of 30 – 11 and so progress to the State Fours. Great stuff fellas, we’re hoping for big things.

Stephen, Nathan and Mick Spong, three of the fab four moving on to the semi final!

Also on Sunday, Graham Hunt, Gordon Lewis, Ash Lewis and Kev Stafford ventured to Penrith to participate in the Zone 5 Senior Fours competition. Although they put in a determined performance, they went down to the home team 13 – 16. From all reports, it was a tight match and you guys gave the opposition plenty to think about.

The other fab four, Graham, Gordon, Ashley and Kevin!

Mixed Pairs Club Championship

The Quarter Finals were conducted this weekend and there were some very fine bowls on show.

In one match, the experienced combination of Reta South and Bob Edwards took on newcomer Eliza Kennon and very experienced Kev Stafford. Eliza and Kev, although a little scratchy of form, had the better of the first half of the game to lead by six shots. However, Reta and Bob pegged them back, and when they won the last three ends, they got home by 22 – 19.

Reta and Bob, the successful duo!

In the other Saturday game, Irene Gilbert and Terry Norwood took on Enid Brown and Ash Lewis. Irene and Terry won three of the first four ends to lead 5 – 4. However, Enid and Ash soon hit their straps to lead 11 – 9 after eleven ends. They then pushed their lead to ten shots with four ends to play, and despite  losing three of those ends, ran out victors by 27 – 19.

Pairs victors, Enid and Ashley!

On Sunday, Terry Butt and Lynne Boshier battled against the Challenders, Mandy and Bob. Despite dropping three shots on the first end, Terry and Lynne led 7 – 3 after five. In a very tight affair, the scores were then 7 all after eight ends and 9 all after ten. Team Boshier shot away to lead 17 – 9 only to be caught at 17 all with three ends to play. In a very high scoring last three ends, Terry and Lynne prevailed to win 25 – 23.

Terry and Lynne move through to the semis of the pairs!

In the last quarter final, unfortunately Gail Fraser and Jim Neely went through on a forfeit due to family illness of their opponents.

So, the Semi-Finals next Sunday will see Reta South/Bob Edwards up against Terry Butt/Lynne Boshier and Enid Brown/Ash Lewis against Jim Neely/Gail Fraser. There should be some very good bowls on show in these two matches.

Social Bowls

Twenty bowlers turned out for a roll on a very pleasant Saturday afternoon. Two games of triples and two of pairs were organised on the Waratah Green which, although very quick, was running very kindly for the bowlers and gave them no excuses for those wayward ones.

On the outside rink 13, Richard Denman, Dave Coltman and Gordon ‘cobbler’ Lewis took on ‘gentleman’ Jim Starkey, Robin ‘maestro’ Staples and Bob ‘windsock’ Crowley. In a stunning first half of the game, Gordon’s team won nine, yes, nine of the first ten ends to lead 15 – 2. Wooo, reach for the oxygen! Well, reach for something team Crowley did, and they turned the match around to be within one shot at 16 – 17 with four ends to play. However, digging deeply Gordon got his team back on track and they went on to win 26 – 17.

On the adjacent rink, Keith Edwards, Peter Cornwell and Tony ‘sparkles’ Oakes took on Brian ‘misère’ Bailey, Barry Werfel and new skipper Peter ‘Virgin’ Flight. This was another game that had a team racing to a lead with Tony’s team ahead 10 – 3 after eight ends. It was then that the game turned with Peter’s team winning eight of the next nine ends to lead 16 – 11. They then remained on top to take out the game 19 – 13. An impressive debut from Peter as skipper.

In one of the pairs matches, Graham ‘bananas’ Hartnup and Ian ‘cros’ Crow took on Grahame ‘smurf’ Denman and Arnold ‘black feet’ Lenczuk. Team Crow had much the better of their opponents in the first half of the match to lead 16 – 5 after eleven ends. Ian was in good touch and Arny just couldn’t find a way for his ‘Rosie’ bowls to get through the walls. However, Arny did find a way around and they got to within three at 17 – 20 with three ends remaining. However, Ian’s team then held firm and they came home victors at 23 – 17.

In the final match, a pairs game, Scott Kennon and Craig Norman battled against Terry ‘knuckles’ Butt and Stephen ‘Doc’ Della. Now, this match turned out to be very much an exhibition game of high quality bowling. All bowlers put down some excellent bowls but Terry and the Doc were in brilliant form. With some spectacular drawing, they won fourteen of the twenty-one ends and had their opponents on the back foot for much of the game. The final score in their favour was 26 – 12.
