Social Bowls Wednesday 29th

With the very heavy rain on Tuesday evening, most of us were doubtful that there would be any bowls on Wednesday. However, the gods were with us as the Waratah Green came up very well mid-morning Wednesday and it was decided that it was game on!  Eighteen eager bowlers, including visitor from Burwood Denis Kearney, turned out so the Match Committee organised three games of triples. The weather held for a couple of hours so the players got about half a game under their belts before the thunder, lightning and rain returned.

On rink 8, Arny ‘black feet’ Lenczuk, Joe O’Donnell and Charles Stewart took on Ted ‘Mr Ed’ McPhee, Peter ‘Virgin’ Flight and Chris ‘unflappable’ Forrester. Charles’ team ripped into things quickly and held a 7 – 0 lead until Chris’ team won the fourth end. Another four ends to team Stewart had the opposition on the back foot and calling for some level of intervention. None available apparently as Charles’ team were comfortably ahead 15 – 7 when thunder and rain gave a hint that the clubhouse might be safer.

On rink 9 in what was to be the 18-ender, visitor Denis Kearney, Bill ‘the’ Pope and Paul ‘ricochet’ Rubie battled against John Fleming, Terry Norwood and John ‘junior’ Cummins. Team Cummins scrambled a couple of shots on the first two ends, only to see visitor Denis put down some excellent bowls on ends three and four and put his team ahead 4 – 2. The scores were level at 5 all after six ends, but then skipper Cummins really hit top form. With some nice on-shots and draws he saw that his team was well ahead at 12 – 6 when the thunder and rain sent the bowlers inside.

In the final game, Graham ‘bananas’ Hartnup, Ian ‘Mr cool’ Duncan and ‘the cobbler’ himself Gordon Lewis battled for bragging rights against Grahame ‘Smurf’ Denman, Barry Werfel and Robin ‘maestro’ Staples. And what a topsy-turvey tewelve ends this turned out to be. Gordon’s team scorched the first three ends to lead 7 – 0 and looked to be red hot. However, as so often happens, the game flipped and Robin inspired his team to win the next six ends and lead 9 – 7! But, the game wasn’t over as Gordon’s team came back to win the next three ends and held the lead at 12 – 9 when play was abandoned.
