BBC BROADCAST WEEKEND 2nd/3rd DECEMBER (Terry Norwood at the desk)
Southern Highlands Cup
The Bowral boys travelled to Bundanoon for the second round of the Cup to play the locals in fours, triples and pairs. The green at Bundanoon was its usual slow and bumpy surface, further affected by the recent rain. In the end, the Bowral team got the better of the green and the locals winning the round 2 – 1 by taking 4 sets to 2. The results of each of the games were:
Fours – Bob Crowley, Terry Butt, Dave Coltman, Nathan Boyers won both sets, 14 – 6 and 8 – 6
Triples – Alastair McGhee, Stephen Della, Dugald Braithwaite won both sets, 9 – 7 and 14 – 3
Pairs – Craig Norman, Kevin Stafford lost both sets 4 – 15 and 7 – 16
The two competition points here give Bowral 5 competition points overall and 6 sets, so Bowral is well placed to take out the Southern Highlands Cup for the 11th time. Go get ’em boys!
BBC Fours Championship
The Fours Championship got underway with the one quarter final match on Sunday at 10am when Arnold ‘black foot’ Lenczuk, Graham Hartnup, Ian ‘merlot’ Crow and Skipper Tony ‘flick’ Oakes battled it out against Terry Norwood, Bob ‘windsock’ Crowley, Stephen ‘doc’ Della and skipper Kevin ‘smooth’ Stafford. Team Oakes grabbed a shot on the first end but Kev’s team led 5 – 1 after four ends. Tony’s team then got the scorecard to 4 – 5 after seven, and then 6 – 8 after ten. The game was very tight at that stage. However, a four shot haul on the next end and another four two ends later saw team Stafford in the ascendency. From that point, restricting the opposition to single shot ends and collecting some multiples themselves, Kev’s team marched on to a comfortable victory at 25 – 9. Tony’s team all battled hard and put down good bowls at times but overall were out-bowled by their opponents with the Doc and Kev prominent.
Terry, Bob, Stephen and Kevin show their winning form!

Social Bowls Saturday
Saturday saw fourteen hardy souls turn out for a game of social bowls under a fairly threatening sky. As things turned out however, the rain and storm held off and the bowlers were able to complete the full twenty-one ends. Given the numbers, the Match Committee organised one game of triples and two of pairs.
In the triples game on rink 8, Grahame ‘smurf’ Denman, Terry Norwood and Chris ‘unflappable’ Forrester took on Jill Harwood, Ted ‘Mr Ed’ McPhee and Ian ‘merlot’ Crow. Chris’ team showed some early form to win three of the opening four ends and lead 5 – 2. They then advanced the lead to 8 – 3 after seven ends and they felt good. However, Ian’s team suddenly exploded into top form and from that point obliterated team Forrester! With ‘Mr Merlot’ in scintillating form and ‘Mr Ed’ also sitting on the jack, they won ten of the remaining fourteen ends. Jill also chipped in with some handy leading and overall they made their opponents look second rate. A huge win at 28 – 14!
In the pairs match on rink 9, Arny ‘black foot’ Lenczuk and skipper Tony ‘flick’ Oakes took on Owen ‘wily Scot’ Williams and Peter ‘Virgin’ Flight. The Match Committee expected this game to be a close affair, but it wasn’t to be. Arny and Tony burst out of the blocks and never looked back. They were totally dominant and not only won the vast majority of the ends, but turned them into multiples. They had Owen and Peter gasping by leading 13 – 2 after seven ends, 21 – 6 after fourteen and ending with a score-line of 32 – 16. Bragging rights clearly went to ‘black foot’ and ‘flick’!
In the final game, Ian ‘Mr Cool’ Duncan and Bob ‘wily one’ Edwards battled for honours against Graham ‘bananas’ Hartnup and ‘gentleman’ Jim Starkey. Despite dropping a shot on the first end, Ian and Bob made a rip roaring start winning the next five ends and setting up an impressive lead of 10 – 1. However, Jim and Graham steadied things and a mouth-watering five shot haul on the ninth end saw them only one shot adrift at 9 – 10. The ‘wily one’ then got his team back on track and he and Ian outpointed Jim and Graham over the run home. The final score in their favour was 21 – 13.
