BBC BROADCAST WEEKEND DECEMBER 9th & 10th (Terry Norwood at the desk)
Some bits of information to begin with:
- Bowls NSW has now examined the geographic structure of bowls within the State and is going to abandon the ‘zone’ term and replace it with ‘Region’. As part of the process a small number of clubs have been shifted from one zone to an adjacent region. Bowral is unaffected by the restructure and remains with the clubs from Zone 5 and becomes Nepean Warragamba Region. The name is, however, being re-examined and may become Nepean Southern Highlands!
- In further Zone (soon to be Region!) and Bowls NSW news, response to a survey on changes to the game of bowls and conditions of play is being sought. Now is the time to have a say if you have some ideas on how the game should be played and administered.
- At the BBC, sufficient bowlers listed their names for pennants and Bowral will enter teams in both Grade 3 and Grade 6. If we get a few more names on the list, Bowral will be able to enter a third side in grade 7. Training/Practice will commence in January so bowlers need to keep an eye out for announcements regarding that.
- The Southern Highland Cup continued this weekend when Robertson hosted Bundanoon. At the end of the day, the points were split 2 to Robertson and 1 to Bundanoon. With one round to play on Saturday December 16th, Bowral leads the competition on 5 points with Robertson and Bundanoon each on 2 points. Bowral needs 2 points in this final round to bring home the Cup for the 11th time. Go get ’em boys!
Social Bowls Saturday
Due to the very hot temperature on Saturday, not surprisingly very few bowlers were interested in attempting to play social bowls. Officially, therefore, there were no social bowls organised this weekend although it was good to see some hardy souls on the green!
BBC Fours Championship
The temperature was into the 30’s on Saturday morning when the semi-finals of the Fours got under way. In the game on rink 10, Scott Kennon, Terry Butt, Al McGhee and skipper Dugald Braithwaite took on Terry Norwood, Bob Crowley, Stephen Della and Kev Stafford. Team Stafford led 9 – 1 and then 15 – 9, but Dugald’s team powered home to win the last seven ends and record a 24 – 15 victory.
In the other semi-final on rink 8, Gordon Lewis, Stephen Day, Ash Lewis and skipper Mick Spong battled against Ted McPhee, Reta South, Steven Goddard and Bob Edwards. For much of the game it was a very tight tussle with the lead changing often. However, Bob’s team got the upper hand and, despite conceding a gobsmacking 7 shots on one end, ground out a well-deserved 23 – 18 win.
Unfortunately, when the the temperature rose in the afternoon the Match Committee had to apply the Extreme Weather Conditions safety rules and postpone the final. A date for the final has not yet been set.
BBC Triples Championship
Sunday dawned much cooler than the blistering heat of the previous day, much to the pleasure of all bowlers. The morning saw two round of sixteen games, and the afternoon the four quarter finals.
In the first of the round of 16 games, Joel Hunt, Graham Hunt and skipper Ian Crow took on Terry Norwood, Robin Staples and Bob Crowley. The game was fairly even through the first half and into the back end with the lead changing a few times. Ian’s team then got the better of their opponents and with Joel leading well they came away with the victory at 23 – 15.
In the other round of 16 game, Owen Williams, Mick Flynn and skipper Craig Norman took on Ian Duncan, Peter Cornwell and Tony Oakes. Tony’s team made a storming start and set up a healthy lead which they were able to maintain throughout. They went on to a solid 28 – 15 victory and moved into the quarter finals.
In the first of the quarter finals (played in the morning by agreement) Ted McPhee, Reta South and Bob Edwards faced off against Noel Fraser, Jim Neely and Gail Fraser. As expected the game was tight early but Bob’s team eventually got the upper hand and went on to win 24 – 16.
In another quarter final played in the morning, Gordon Lewis, Ash Lewis and Mick Spong played Peter Flight, Steven Goddard and Al McGhee. With Mick in top form, team Spong proved too strong for their opposition and finished winners at 29 – 15.
Backing up from the morning, Ian Duncan, Peter Cornwell and Tony Oakes found themselves against tough opposition in Scott Kennon, Terry Butt and Kevin Stafford. Kev’s team, after a slow start, proved too strong and they ran out 24 – 14 winners.
In the last of the quarters, Eliza Kennon, Stephen Della and Dugald Braithwaite took on the morning victors Joel Hunt, Graham Hunt and skipper Ian Crow. Dugald’s team was well ahead at 18 – 1 when, unfortunately, illness got the better of Ian’s team and they were forced to concede.
And so, the semi-finals on Sunday next December 17 at 9am will see Braithwaite play Edwards and Stafford play Spong. Both games should be absolute crackers!
