BBC BROADCAST SATURDAY DECEMBER 23rd (Terry Norwood at the desk)
A few bits of information to begin with:
- For those bowlers who are interested, there will be social bowls on Wednesday December 27th. Please ensure that you have your names registered by 11.30 so that the Match Committee has plenty of time to organise the games.
- Pennant training and drill sessions will commence in January so bowlers need to keep an eye out for the announcement of dates for those.
- Another reminder that the Club Fours Championship final has been deferred until 2024 at a date to be advised. The game should be a beauty so watch out for the date so you can get along.
Social Bowls Saturday 23rd
Sixteen eager bowlers turned out for a game on Saturday and, despite a twenty minute delay at one stage for the rain, managed to get through the games. One game of pairs was set up and two games of triples.
In the pairs match, Andy Connor and Al McGhee took on Arnold ‘black foot’ Lenczuk and Mr Merlot himself Ian Crow. Andy and Al had the better of their opponents in the early stages and led 7 – 0 after four ends. Ian and Arny got themselves on the scorecard but were still trailing after ten ends 14 – 4. In fact, Team Crow had the better of the second half of the game but found the gap too large to overcome. The final score in favour of Andy and Al was 19 – 15.
In one of the triples games, Barry Werfel, Owen Williams and Clive ‘dasher’ Neutze took on Graham Hartnup, Peter ‘Virgin’ Flight and the cobbler himself Gordon Lewis. Gordon’s team led 3 – 1 after three ends but found themselves behind at 3 – 7 after six ends. With Gordon’s usual tenacity at the fore, his team eventually ground their way to the lead on the thirteenth end. This was a lead they were not to surrender as they pushed on to a 19 – 14 victory.
In the other triples match, Grahame ‘smurf’ Denman, Terry Norwood and Chris unflappable’ Forrester battled for bragging rights against Keith ‘the fox’ Edwards, Tony ‘flick’ Oakes and skipper Bob ‘wily’ Edwards. Bob’s team made the better start to the game but by the eighth end the scores were locked at 6 all. However, this was as close as team Forrester was to get to their opponents all game. From that point they were blitzed, despite actually bowling quite well themselves. All team Edwards were on fire with Bob in especially brilliant form. They won decisively by 19 – 8; a real drubbing.
