BBC BROADCAST WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 27th (Terry Norwood at the desk)
Some info/reminders for a start:
- The Club Fours Championship has been deferred until 2024 at a date to be announced. Keep an eye out for the announcement if you are interested in seeing a cracking game of bowls.
- Training and drill sessions will commence in January for aspiring Pennants players. The competitions start in late February with Bowral having teams in Grade 3 and Grade 7. There will be six teams in each of the sections that Bowral is involved in, so the competition will run for ten weeks.
- Social bowls will continue on Wednesdays and Saturdays over the festive/new year season. And another reminder that names need to be listed or phoned in by 11.30 so that there is plenty of time to organise things prior to kick-off at 12.30.
Social Bowls Wednesday December 27th
On Wednesday, the weather gods were very kind to Bowral bowlers as there were plenty of storms around the Highlands and down the mountain to Camden. Despite a slightly damp start, bowlers were able to complete the matches without delays. Twenty-six hardy souls turned out, so the Match Committee was able to organise two games of pairs and three of triples.
In the 18-ender on rink 9, Grahame ‘smurf’ Denman, Keith ‘fox’ Edwards and ‘junior’ Cummins took on Bill and H Dodwell and skipper Bill ‘the’ Pope. In a no-holds barred opening junior’s team thundered to a 10 – 1 lead after six ends, which included five shots on the third end. However, the Pope got his team firing and to trail by only one shot 12 – 13 on the eleventh end. Team Pope continued some good form to hit the lead on the fourteenth end. Not done, junior’s team hit back to take the lead on the seventeenth and held on to win by a shot. What a nail-biter at 19 – 18!
Keith, the ‘fox’ and Bill ‘the’ Pope were in good touch!
In another triples game on rink 7, Arnold Lenczuk, Ted ‘Mr Ed’ McPee and skipper Chris ‘serene’ Forrester battled against Jill Harwood, Graham ‘jockey’ Hunt and Gordon ‘cobbler’ Lewis. In a stunning start, Gordon’s team blitzed the opposition to take the first six ends and lead 14 – 0. This included a monstrous 6 shots on the third which had team Forrester reaching for the oxygen. However, Chris’ team got onto the scorecard and started to nibble away at the deficit. They got within eight shots by the fourteenth but basically ran out of steam at that point. Team Lewis charged home to come away with a huge victory at 30 – 11. Ouch!!
‘jockey’ Hunt and ‘cobbler’ Lewis harassed their opponents!
In the last of the triples games on rink 12, Joel ‘Grrr’ Hunt, Peter ‘Virgin’ Flight and Tony ‘flick’ Oakes battled for bragging rights against Denis Lees, George Hindi and skipper Clive ‘dasher’ Neutze. Both teams got onto the scorecard early for the score to be locked at 6 all after four ends. At this point, Clive’s team got the better of things winning six of the next seven ends and setting up a very solid lead of 15 – 7. Tony’s team hit back with some very good ends and by the sixteenth end was within three shots. However, their run then fizzled and they failed to win another end as Clive’s team ran out 32 – 17 victors.
‘dasher’ Clive on the mat and heading for a big win!
In the first of the pairs games on rink 7, Peter Cornwell and Bob ‘wily’ Edwards took on Neville ‘the’ Tanner and Don ‘handy’ Chapman. This turned out to be the classic game of two completely different halves. Bob’s team won the first six ends on the way to a very solid lead of 10 – 3 at the halfway stage of eleven ends. And then the fortunes changed! Neville and Don lost only two of the last ten ends as they dominated their opponents and charged home. The final score in their favour was 21 – 14.
In the second of the pairs matches on rink 8, Graham Hartnup and skipper Mick ‘potter’ Flynn battled for honours against Joe O’Donnell and Peter Charnley. The teams shared early ends for the score to be locked at 5 all after seven ends. The match continued to be close with the scores even at 8 all and then 9 all after thirteen ends. This game was proving to be very tight indeed! Peter’s team then edged to a two shot lead only to be caught at 12 all with two ends to play. Peter’s team hung in to take shots on the last two ends and victory. This turned out to be one of the lowest scoring games we’ve had in a while; 26 shots score in twenty-one ends. What a tight one!
Mick and Joe on the mat in a very close encounter!
