BBC BROADCAST WEDNESDAY JANUARY 10th

BBC BROADCAST WEDNESDAY JANUARY 10th      (Terry Norwood at the desk)

Some info and reminders to begin with:

  1. The funeral of former bowler Kel Limbrick will be held at 11am today Thursday at the Anglican Church in Main St Mittagong. Vale Kel Limbrick, RIP.
  2. Another reminder that the Chris Benton Memorial event will be staged on Saturday February 3rd commencing at 12.30. The nomination sheet is on the Men’s notice board for bowlers to list their names. You can list your name as a single entry and leave it to the Bowls Secretary to put you in a team, or you can form a full team of four and list all the names. Remember, the proceeds from this event are donated to brain cancer research so let’s get behind it.
  3. And a second reminder, that on Wednesday February 14th, we will be joined by a group of bowlers from the ACT for social bowling. Given that there are likely to be more than fifty bowlers in total, we will require one of the grass greens as well as the Waratah Green. The Lewis Green has the better grass coverage and some addition work will be put into improving the surface for the 14th.

Social Bowls

Thirty-three bowlers turned out for bowls on the 14th, although it had looked as though we’d have thirty-four at one stage. The Match Committee decided to run the games east-west, something that hadn’t happened for quite some time. With the rinks also changed from the ‘red’ to the ‘blue’ and bowling in this different direction, many bowlers felt that the green was a little slower. Be that as it may, the conditions were very pleasant with none of the dark clouds turning to storm. With thirty-three bowlers, the Match Committee organised one game of pairs and five of  triples, with one of the triples games having a swing lead bowling for both sides.

In the pairs match on rink 11, Ted ‘Mr Ed’ McPhee and the unflappable Chris Forrester took on Denis Lees and skipper Tony ‘flick’ Oakes. Ted and Chris won the first four ends to lead 4 – 0, but by the  sixth end Denis and Tony were on the scorecard and only a shot behind. This was small comfort though, because Ted and Chris were getting the better of the battle and led 12 – 5 after ten ends. With Chris in terrific form, he and Ted then dominated the remainder of the game to run out very comfortable winners. Overall, they won fifteen of the twenty-one ends and won by fourteen shots at 23 – 9.

The unflappable Chris had an excellent game!

In the triples match on rink 8, Arnie Lenczuk, Peter ‘Virgin’ Flight and the dashing Clive Neutze tussled for supremacy against Russell Dunstan, Bill Meredith and Ian ‘one-knee’ Crow. With a couple of four shot scores, Clive’s team held an impressive 8 – 1 lead after only three ends, but Ian’s team hit back and the score was 8 – 6 a couple of ends later. And when team Crow scored a couple of fours themselves, they hit the lead at 14 – 12. Unfortunately for team Crow however, they then fell into a hole . . . a deep one! They could win only two of the remaining thirteen ends, and were blitzed by the opposition. With some ripping ends, including three scores of five, Clive’s team stormed home to a huge 39 – 18 victory.

‘Dasher’ Clive led his team to a huge win!

On rink 9, Charles Coode acted as swing lead for Viv Gear and gentleman Jim Starkey on the one hand, and Joe O’Donnell and the irrepressible Gordon Lewis on the other. Both teams won early ends for the score to be 5 – 5 after five ends. However a five shot haul on the seventh and a four shortly after saw Jim’s team catapult into a solid lead of 17 – 7 after ten ends. But a breeze of change started to stir! Typical of Gordon Lewis led teams, they hit back. With a five shot bag on the thirteenth ends, they were on their way, and by the seventeenth end had hit the lead. In a thrilling finish, the scores were 20 all after nineteen ends and 21 all after twenty-one! In the play-off end, Gordon’s team got home by a shot; what a game.

A draw last week, and an extra end this week gentleman Jim is making the games tight!

On the next rink, Joel ‘Grrr’ Hunt, Ian Duncan and skipper Bob ‘chinsock’ Crowley battled against Brian ‘misère’ Bailey, Owen Williams and the wily one Bob Edwards. With a couple of three shot ends, team Crowley led 6 – 1 after three ends, but by the sixth end the scores were locked at 8 all. Team Edwards then edged to the lead and after eleven ends had a handy lead at 14 – 9. They extended the lead, but when chinsock’s team netted four shots on the sixteenth, they were only two shots adrift at 15 – 17. However, unfortunately for team Crowley the opposition took control from that point to win the last five ends and take the match 25 – 15.

Wily Bob was justifiably pleased with his team’s excellent win!

In the 18-ender on rink 13, Graham Denman, Bill ‘the’ Pope and ‘junior’ Cummins tussled for bragging rights against the fox Keith Edwards, John Fleming and Paul ‘ricochet’ Rubie. Junior’s team won the first three ends to lead 4 – 0 and after seven ends, led 7 – 2. And then calamity! Paul’s team scored seven shots . . . yes folk, 7 huge shots on the next end and went from five down to two up! Wowie! And they celebrated with two on the next end to lead 11 – 7. Not done, junior’s team got to within a shot after thirteen and were still only a shot off the pace after fifteen. However, when stumps were pulled after sixteen ends, Paul’s team were two ahead at 16 – 14. Seven shots, wow!!

Even skipper Paul was surprised when his team notched up a 7 on the eighth end!

In the final game, newcomer Shane Harvey, Graham ‘jockey’ Hunt and the maestro Robin Staples took on Graham Hartnup, Terry Norwood and skipper Mick ‘potters’ Flynn. In an absolutely ripping start, including a couple of fours, Mick’s team raced to a lead of 11 – 0 after five ends. With some fairly tidy bowling and all the luck that was on offer, they then raced to a lead of 17 – 2 after ten ends and looked comfortable. Matters didn’t change greatly in the second half of the game either, as Mick’s team continued to pile the pressure on the opposition. With Mick in very fine form, they went on to an impressive victory of 30 – 12.

Mick Flynn had a terrific game!
