BBC BROADCAST WEDNESDAY JANUARY 17th (Terry Norwood at the desk)
A couple of reminders:
- The Chris Benton Memorial event will be staged on Saturday February 3rd commencing at 12.30. The nomination sheet is posted on the Men’s notice board for bowlers to list their names. You can write you own name up and the Bowls Secretary will place you in a team, or you can organise a full team of four. This is a men only event and the proceeds are donated to brain cancer research, a most worthy cause.
- Also on both the Men’s and Women’s notice boards are schedules for bowlers to list their names to participate in the social bowls day with the visitors from the ACT on Wednesday February 14th. There are likely to be forty bowlers from Canberra and we will integrate Bowral bowlers with them. It promises to be a fun day with some excellent bowls, so let’s hope the weather is kind.
Social Bowls
Twenty-four hardy bowlers listed their names for social bowls on a Wednesday that carried a weather forecast of rain, and plenty of it. The Match Committee decided to organise games and hope that it would be possible to complete at least half a match before the arrival of any rain. As it happened, two of the games managed to complete eleven ends, another two fourteen ends and the fifth game sixteen ends, so the afternoon wasn’t a complete write-off.
In a pairs game on rink 8, the two Johns Fleming and Cummins took on Bill Pope and Paul ‘ricochet’ Rubie. In a low scoring but decisive start, Bill and Paul won the first four ends to lead 5 – 0. Still on top, they pushed the lead to 7 – 2 after seven and, when they led 11 – 4 after eleven ends, they looked to have the Johns on the ropes. At this point, the rain intervened, so Bill and Paul retired to the bar warm in the knowledge of a comfortable ‘victory’! Well, maybe a half victory! And it must be getting close to these fine 18-enders issuing another 18-ender challenge to all-comers!
The quiet achiever, ‘the’ Pope led well for the dominant team!
In another pairs game on rink 9, Russell Dunstan and the wily Owen Williams battled against Joe O’Donnell and Ian ‘art dealer’ Crow. In a storming start to the match, Russell and Owen ravaged the opposition on the first six ends to lead 10 – 0. Joe and Ian then won a couple of ends but by the eleventh end, they were down 2 – 15 and praying for rain to stay away so they could make a come back. And the come back had started as they had reduced the lead to seven shots when the rain arrived. 19 – 12 was the ‘victory’ to Russell and Owen.
Ian was frustrated that the rain blocked the comeback!
In a triples game on rink 10, Shane Harvey, Don Chapman and the ‘maestro’ Robin Staples took on Charles Coode, Arnie ‘man in black’ Lenczuk and Mick ‘the potters’ Flynn. Mick’s team won the first four ends and a couple of ends later led 8 – 2. However, team Staples notched up a mouthwatering five on the seventh end, and by the ninth end had edged to a lead of 10 – 8! However, Mick’s team then regained better touch to win four ends on the trot and retake the lead. When the rain stopped play after fourteen ends, Mick’s team took the ‘victory’ by 15 – 12.
Arnie’s ‘rosie’ bowls were apparently in good form!
In another pairs game on rink 11, Peter ‘Virgin’ Flight and skipper the wily leftie Bob Edwards battled for honours against Graham ‘jockey’ Hunt and Steven ‘smooth’ Goddard. In another game with a one-sided opening, Graham and Steven took the first five ends and had their opponents frustrated. And when they notched up a five and a four, they led 16 -4 on the ninth end, and looked in control of proceedings. Unfortunately for Peter and Bob, this dominance continued as team Goddard led 19 – 6 when (fortunately for Peter and Bob!) the rain halted play on the fourteenth end.
Graham, the ‘jockey’ rides another bowl home!
In the final game, a triples match on rink 12, Grahame ‘grandad’ Denman, Paul McInerney and the unflappable Chris Forrester took on Rick Reynolds, Col ‘Hawaii’ Stone and Terry Norwood. And like all the other games, one side dominated the opening with Terry’s team racing to a 10 – 1 lead after five ends. With Paul glancing a few bowls into the heads, Chris’ team then won three of the next four ends but were still trailing 4 – 11. When the rain intervened eleven ends had been completed and team Norwood claimed ‘victory’ at 17 – 4.
Paul performed the ricochet to get his team into the head!
