BBC BROADCAST SATURDAY JANUARY 27th      (Terry Norwood at the desk)

Starting with some information and reminders:

1. The funeral of Mrs Rosemary Denman, late wife of bowler Richard Denman, will be held in the Uniting Church in Bowral commencing at 11am. It would be nice to get a good turnout of bowlers to support Richard and family.
2. The BBC Open Singles Championship, the Club’s Blue Ribband event, will commence on Sunday February 11th commencing at 10am. The entry schedule is now posted on the notice board awaiting the names of all interested bowlers. Entries close at 5pm on Saturday 3rd.
3. The deferred final of the Men’s Fours Championship between team Braithwaite and team Edwards will be held on Sunday March 17th commencing at 10am.
4. The Chris Benton Memorial day will be staged next Saturday February 3rd. Commencing with a ‘spider’, each team of four will play three matches of eight ends. Good luck all bowlers.
5. Another reminder that social bowls on Wednesday February 14th will be combined with the bowlers visiting from Canberra. There is a special entry form posted on the notice board for bowlers to list their names to join this social day. Because there is a large contingent of bowlers coming from Canberra it would be helpful for organisers to know how many Bowral bowlers will be joining them, so please get your name entered as soon as possible.
6. Pennant trial matches will be staged on Saturday February 10th. Social bowlers please note that there will not be organised social bowls on that day, but you are free to roll up on the grass greens if you so choose.

Social Bowls Saturday January 27th

Sixteen eager bowlers turned out for bowls on Saturday afternoon. A fairly stiff breeze that couldn’t make up its mind where it wanted to come from made things slightly challenging at times. Given the number of bowlers, the Match Committee organised one game of pairs and two of triples.

In a triples game on rink 9, Jill Harwood, Arnie ‘man in black’ Lenczuk and the evergreen Gordon ‘cobblers’ Lewis battled against Keith ‘the fox’ Edwards, Terry ‘PNE” Norwood and the wily one Mick Flynn. Mick’s team got off to a flying start taking the first three ends to lead 8 – 0, and feeling fairly good about proceedings. However, and not at all surprisingly, Gordon then got his team moving with some fine bowls to win five the next six ends and get to within two shots. As the teams battled through the ends, team Flynn ground their way to a five shot lead by the fourteenth end. However shortly after, a four shot haul on the eighteenth end to team Lewis had the teams level at 14 all, and it was game on! Gordon’s team then took a shot on the next end, but a three on the following end and two on the last saw Mick’s team scramble home in a tight one. Skipper Gordon bowled very well, but the major force was the foxy Keith who consistently set his team to advantage.

In the pairs game on rink 9, Graham ‘jockey’ Hunt and Ian ‘Cros’ Crow took on Ian ‘cool’ Duncan and skipper Richard Denman. Ian and Richard grabbed four shots on the first end and had their opponents momentarily on the back foot. However, Graham and Ian quickly hit their straps, found form and began to put good numbers on the scorecard. Ian Duncan was leading well for the Denman team, but most things he tried were more than matched by ‘jockey’ Hunt who continued to ride those purple bowls close to the jack. And with Ian the Crow ricocheting his mottled bowls in amongst the head bowls, team Crow consistently had their beleaguered opposition bowlers under huge pressure. Ahead 13 – 9 after eleven ends, Graham and Ian monstered their opponents in the run home winning eight of the ten ends and running home victors by 25 – 12. And bowlers beware . . . Graham ‘jockey’ Hunt is in red hot form at present!

In the third game, a triples match on rink 10, Rick Reynolds, Brian ‘misère’ Bailey and ‘gentleman’ Don Chapman were up against Graham ‘grandad’ Denman, Peter ‘Virgin’ Flight and ‘gentleman’ Jim Starkey. Now, we need to note from the start that ‘gentleman’ Jim, after three one shot games and a draw, was determined that this game was not going to have a one shot margin. And he succeeded, but let’s get there through the game! Don’s team blitzed Jim’s at the start, including an eye-watering six shot haul, to lead 13 – 0 after four ends. It was clear that this game was not going the way Jim had planned. However, Jim did get his men firing and they won the next four ends to halve the lead. As the game progressed, team Chapman continue to match Jim’s team and their lead remained fairly constant. However, when Jim’s team grabbed three shots on the eighteenth end, they were within three, and Jim’s hopes rocketed. Don’s team rose to the challenge however, and a three on the last end gave them a 22 – 16 victory. Not a one shotter, but not quite what gentleman Jim had in mind!
