Social Bowls Wednesday February 21st
Thirty-two eager-beaver bowlers turned out for social bowls on what turned out to be an afternoon of comfortable weather. The games started under heavy cloud but the day brightened somewhat and the rain that had been forecasted didn’t ever look like arriving . . . thank goodness! The Match Committee organised two games of pairs and four of triples, all to be played on the Waratah Green.
On rink 7, Brian ‘misère’ Bailey, Joe O’Donnell and Mick ‘Potters’ Flynn took on David Charlesworth, Paul McInerney and the miraculous one Peter Morales. Although Mick’s team won the first four ends, they lost the next four to be trailing team Morales 5 – 9. And this became a lead that Peter’s team were not to surrender. They led 12 – 6 after ten ends and then 14 – 7 after thirteen. Down 10 – 22, Mick’s team raised some hope with a five shot haul on the 19th, but the hope was snuffed out when they lost the last two ends. The final score was 22 – 15 to Peter’s team. Great to see you back on the green Peter!
Mr Miraculous led his team home again!
In another triples match on the next rink, Jill Harwood, Michael Hook and the wily leftie Bob Edwards battled for honours against Joel ‘Grrr’ Hunt, Col ‘Hawaii’ Stone and skipper Owen Williams. Despite losing a shot on the first end, Owen’s team was soon into stride winning the next four ends to lead 7 – 1. They continued to take the honours to stretch the lead to 11 – 2 after nine. And then a change came over the game; by the fourteenth end the scores were level at 12 all and a four to Bob’s team on the next end put them in front for the first time. Before the game was over Bob’s team had snatched another four shot haul and they went on to a 21 – 16 victory.
Skipper Bob is in good form at the moment!
In the 18-ender on rink 9, John Fleming, Keith ‘foxy’ Edwards and ‘Mr Ricochet’ Paul Rubie vied for bragging honours against Graham ‘grandad’ Denman, Neville ‘the’ Tanner and Terry Norwood. This turned out to be a very tight, low-scoring match with some very competitive bowls being played. Of the eighteen ends, sixteen finished with single shot results. There was one end where two shots were scored, which left the last end as the difference between the sides. And this was a five shot haul on the sixth end which went to Terry’s team! It was nine ends apiece, and that one end that separated the two teams with a final score-line of 14 – 9.
Grahame and John had a good battle as leads!
In the final triples match on rink 10, Wal Markow, Graham ‘jockey’ Hunt and the indefatigable cobbler Gordon Lewis did battle against newcomer Alex Christlo, Ted ‘Mr Ed’ McPhee and Stephen ‘exbundy’ Day. Despite dropping a shot on the first end, Gordon’s team ripped the game open with a blistering start to lead 10 – 1 after four ends. They dropped another single on the fifth end but won the five ends that followed to lead 21 – 2 at the halfway stage. All three team Lewis bowlers were on top with Gordon in particularly hot form. They continued on their merry way finally running out convincing winners at 28 – 13. And to make things even sweeter, this game won the $198 jackpot!
Gordon Lewis had yet another blinder!
In the first of the pairs matches on rink 11, Peter ‘Virgin’ Flight and the irrepressible Chris Forrester took on Ian ‘smooth’ Duncan and the man in black Arny Lenczuk. Both sides made their way onto the score-card early for the score to be 4 – 3 to Arny’s team after five ends. However, a scintillating five shotter on the next end followed by two on the next put Chris’ team in the lead. Not to be denied, Arny and Ian then hit back solidly to have scores even at 11 – 11 after eleven ends. Team Lenczuk then forged to the lead, but a massive six shotter on the fifteenth end saw Chris and Peter in front 18 – 17. However, from that point, Ian and Arny took over the scoring and ran out comfortable 29 – 20 winners.
Ian had a good game as lead for the victors!
In the second on the pairs matches Charles Coode and Clive ‘dasher’ Neutze took on the banana man Graham Hartnup and Ian ‘merlot/Cros’ Crow. Charles and Clive had the better of the start winning the first three ends to lead 6 – 0, and although Graham and Ian grabbed three shots on the next end, the score had been advanced to 13 – 3 by the seventh end. Graham and Ian then won the next four ends to reduce the deficit to a single shot, but calamity struck them on the next end. Clive and Charles scored an eye-blinding seven on the twelfth end to lead by eight. Undeterred, Ian and Graham dug in and by the 19th end had reduced the lead to three shots with one end to play. And then, another calamity for team Crow . . . they dropped another seven shots on the last end to go down 33 – 23.
Clive and his partner notched up a couple of ‘sevens’ on the way to victory!
