BBC BROADCAST WEDNESDAY MARCH 20th       (Terry Norwood at the desk)

Some bits of info to start with:

  1. The grade three pennants team will be at home on Saturday against the bowlers from St Mary’s. The Bowral Bulls are currently undefeated and are hoping to maintain this record when they roll off at 11.30.
  2. The grade six pennants team is also at home this Saturday and will host the team from Bundanoon. Bowral is still to win a match this season but the lads and lasses are raring to notch up a win. Roll off will be 1pm on rinks 11 to 13. There should be some very good bowls from 11.30 on Saturday for anyone wanting to have a look.
  3. On Wednesday April 3rd, the Match Committee will be putting on an after bowls BBQ for bowlers. To help with catering, intending bowlers are asked to list their names asap on the schedule which is posted on the notice board.

Social Bowls

Wednesday had looked fairly bleak at the outset, but the weather gods were kind in the end and a full afternoon of bowls was possible. In fact, it wasn’t too bad an afternoon at all, although a fluky wind kept bowlers on their toes. There were no excuses though for any wayward bowls, especially those couple that snaked onto the the adjacent rink! Twenty-eight bowlers turned out for a roll so the Match Committee organised five games of triples and one of pairs.

In the pairs game on rink 8, Paul McInerney and gentleman Jim Starkey took on Joe O’Donnell and the wily Scot himself Owen Williams. Although Joe and Owen lost the first two ends they were well underway with a five shot haul on the third. They then won the next two ends and were leading comfortably at 9 – 3. And this was a lead they were never to surrender. Try as they might, Paul and Jim just couldn’t really get to their opponents. They did get to within five shots a couple of times but each time Joe and Owen pulled away again. Team Williams scooted away in the back half and got home 28 – 13 victors.

Owen, the wily one, had a big win!

In the 18-ender on rink 9, Keith ‘foxy’ Edwards, Bill ‘the’ Pope and John ‘junior’ Cummins battled against Grahame ‘pop’ Denman, Wal Markow and Paul ‘ricochet’ Ruby. After dropping a shot on the first end, junior’s team then won the next five ends and had the opposition under pressure at 8 – 1. Ricochet’s team then won a couple of ends so that at the halfway point the deficit had been reduced to five at 4 – 9. However, a four shotter to team Cummins restored their lead and from that point they took no prisoners. They did drop four shots on the seventeenth but they had a comfortable win at 19 – 11 in the end. No 8 shot ends this week lads!!

A victory, and no eight shotters against junior!!

In the triples match on rink 10, Ian ‘smooth’ Duncan, Graham ‘jockey’ Hunt and the maestro Robin Staples tussled for supremacy against Denis Lees, Charles Coode and the Bob ‘ebullience’ Crowley. Both sides won early ends for the score to be 5 – 4 to Robin’s team after four ends. The maestro’s team then also won four of the next five ends to extend the lead to 13 – 7. They still led comfortably at 15 – 9 after twelve ends and seemed to be well in control. However, a change came over the game at that point as opposing skipper Bob hit top form. In a startling turnaround, his team won the next eight ends on the trot to lead by five with one end to play. They did drop a shot on the last, but they ended the day victors by four shots at 20 – 16. To the casual observer, Ian Duncan led well all day, Charles Coode was a solid second and Mr Ebullience had a cracker in the second half.

Ian had those speckled bowls close to the jack a lot of the time!

On rink 11, Mark Rundle, Neville ‘the’ Tanner and dasher Clive Neutze clashed with Michael Hook, David Charlesworth and skipper Mick ‘the silent one’ Flynn. In a ripping start including a five shotter, Mick’s team raced to a lead of 7 – 1 after four ends. They then continued their dominance to lead 14 – 3 after nine ends and have their opponents gasping for oxygen. However, as they say, never count your chickens . . . Clive’s team came roaring back to win five of the next six ends and get to within a shot. It was then game on, until Mick’s team notched up a five shotter and ran some ends together to take a comfortable lead into the last couple of ends. They held on to win 27 – 20 and to make things sweeter, the bowlers in this game shared the jackpot.

Mick’s team had the better of the clash against Clive’s!

In the final game on rink 12, Ted ‘Mr Ed’ McPhee, Peter ‘Virgin’ Flight and the evergreen Gordon ‘cobbler’ Lewis took on Joel ‘Grr’ Hunt, Terry Norwood and the wily Bob Edwards. In a blistering start, including a five shotter on the opening end, Gordon’s team blitzed their opposition to lead 10 – 0 after five ends. Bob’s team then won a couple of ends but they were still well behind at 13 – 2 after nine ends. However, team Edwards then found some better form to win five of the next six ends and edge to the lead by a shot. That was, however, the end of their run as they fizzled to offer up twelve shots over the last five ends. The final score in favour of Gordon’s team was 24 – 18. Ted is getting used to bowling with the stick and bowled well and, of course, Mr Evergreen was in fine form!

The evergreen Gordon had an excellent game . . . again!
