BBC BROADCAST WEDNESDAY APRIL 10th (Terry Norwood at the desk)
Some bits of info to begin with:
- After last weekend’s postponement of matches due to the wet weather, the Pennants competitions recommence this coming weekend. The Grade Three team will travel to Campbelltown on Saturday and then meet the Blacktown Workers side at home on Sunday. The Grade Three boys are on top of the competition at present with five wins from five and are hoping to hold on to that ranking over the weekend. The Grade Six team will be at home on Saturday to the very strong Taralga team, and then travel on Sunday to take on Camden. The Sixers had their first win a couple of weeks ago and are hopeful of a much better showing in the second half of the season. Best wishes for fine bowling go to both teams.
- There will be social bowls on Saturday for any interested bowlers as there will be a couple of rinks available.
- Just letting bowlers know that social bowls on Wednesday 17th will, at least in part, be assigned to the Wilson Green. Management has asked for feedback on the quality of the grass surface, so allocating some games will allow us to provide the feedback.
Social Bowls Wednesday 10th
Thirty-four bowlers turned out for bowls on Wednesday although there was the feel of winter in the air for the first time since last year. A stiffish, variable wind gave the bowlers something to take into account, although it couldn’t be blamed for those couple of bowls that that managed to find their way onto the adjacent rink! It was great to be able to welcome Bob Millichamp as a visitor from St Leonards in Victoria; we very much enjoyed having you as part of the group Bob. The Match Committee organised one game of pairs and five of triples.
On rink 7, Joel ‘Grr’ Hunt, Mark Rundle and the irrepressible Chris Forrester faced off against Ian ‘smooth’ Duncan, Bill Meredith and skipper Owen ‘wily’ Williams. And, against expectations, this game turned out to be a very one-sided affair. Chris’ team had the better of their opponents with a three on the first end and carried on from there. They never relaxed their grip on the game winning fifteen of the twenty-one ends, and showing the opposition no mercy. As lead, Joel was never off the jack and gave his opposite number an absolute hammering in a man of the match display! The final score in favour of Chris’ team was 28 – 8.
In a triples match on the next rink, Russell Dunstan, Paul McInerney and skipper Jim ‘gentleman’ Starkey took on Mike Hook, Neville ‘the’ Tanner and maestro Robin Staples. Both sides won early ends for the score to be 6 – 5 in favour of Robin’s team after five ends. It was then, however, that Robin’s team gained the ascendency winning eight of the next eleven ends and racing to a commanding lead of 21 – 8. Unfortunately for them, team Starkey couldn’t match it with the opposition in the back half of the game, although a three shotter on the last end gave them some satisfaction. The final score was 26 – 13 in favour of Robin’s team.
In the 18-ender on rink 9, Bill ‘the’ Pope, Keith ‘foxy’ Edwards and skipper John ‘junior’ Cummins battled for bragging rights against Graham Hartnup, Barry Werfel and Paul ‘ricochet’ Rubie. Both sides scored early, but it was Paul’s team that set up a lead of 7 – 2 after five ends. However, much to their shock and horror, they were blitzed on the next two ends conceding nine shots and the lead. They got the score back to 10 – 11, but then managed to leak seven shots on two more ends to be down 18 – 10. With junior licking his lips and really enjoying proceedings (and putting down a couple of reasonable bowls) team Cummins pressed on to victory at 21 – 15. No six or eight shotters this week boys!
In a triples match designed as a tune up for Pennants, Graham ‘jockey’ Hunt, Arny ‘black feet’ Lenczuk and wily Bob Edwards faced off against Peter ‘Virgin’ Flight, Dave Charlesworth and the cobbler himself, the evergreen Gordon Lewis. And what a crackingly close game this turned out to be! Gordon’ team made the better start winning three of the first four ends, but by the eighth end led by only a single shot at 9 – 8. Bob’s team, with plenty of chat, then won four ends to hit the lead 13 – 12. They pushed this out to 17 – 14 at the fifteenth only to have team Lewis get the jump on them and snatch the lead back. Not finished, Bob’s team got the score to 21 all with one end to play; what a game! In a gripping finish, Gordon’s team scored a single on the last to win 22 – 21. Bragging rights shared in a thriller!!
On the next rink, Grahame ‘pop’ Denman, Terry Norwood and Richard ‘denman’ Denman battled against Denis ‘rowdy’ Lees, Col ‘Hawaii’ Stone and Peter ‘miraculous’ Morales. Peter’s team, with Denis on fire as the lead, won the first four ends and had furrowed brows on the opposition. However, much to their relief, Richard’s men won the next three ends and it was game on. It was 9 all after ten ends, but, by the seventeenth, Mr ‘miraculous’ had his team in front 19 – 15. And then disaster struck them! They conceded a six shotter on the next end and it was back to a close one; so close in fact that it was 22 all after the allocated 21 ends! All agreed on a decider, and team Denman came out on top at 24 – 22. A ripper of a game!
In the pairs match on the outside rink, Ted ‘Mr Ed’ McPhee and visitor Bob Millichamp battled for honours against Charles Coode and Kev Stafford. And what a great match this was! Kev’s team got slightly the better of the opening, but when they conceded a five shotter on the fifth, they were down 5 – 8. Undeterred, they hit back and by the tenth end it was all square at 12 all. Bob and Ted won the next three ends, but then Charles and Kev put together five ends to lead 20 – 17 with three ends to play. In a real thriller, Kev and Charles held on to win by a shot at 21 – 20! It was great to have visitor Bob on the green and he showed that he was a high quality bowler.
