BBC BROADCAST WEDNESDAY APRIL 24th (Terry Norwood at the desk)
Some info to begin with:
- The Grade Three pennants team will play host to the side from Springwood on Saturday in the second last round of the competition. Currently three points from the lead, the Bowral boys will be hoping to keep their premiership hopes alive with a win. Go get ’em Threes!
- The Grade Six pennants team will travel to Robertson to take on the locals in the second last round of the competition. A few weeks ago Robertson took the honours by a single shot and Bowral is keen to reverse that result. A win would go a long way to moving Bowral away from the bottom of the table.
- The Wednesday social bowlers have agreed with management to play for a month on the Wilson Green and provide feedback on its condition. After two weeks, the Match Committee is gathering quite some information but is still keen to hear from bowlers over the next couple of weeks.
- For those who haven’t yet heard, that venerable ‘fox’, excellent bowler and great bloke Keith Edwards celebrated his 93rd birthday on April 16th. Hearty congratulations Keith!
Social Bowls Wednesday 24th
Thirty bowlers turned out on Wednesday, a coolish but pleasant afternoon. Apart from the 18-enders who played on rink 9 of the Waratah Green, the matches were assigned to the Wilson Green. With thirty bowlers, five games of triples were organised by the Match Committee.
In the 18-ender, John Fleming, Bill ‘the’ Pope and skipper Paul ‘ricochet’ Rubie took on Bill Dodwell (filling in for Keith Edwards who must have been off celebrating his birthday somewhere!), Graham Hartnup and Owen ‘wily’ Williams. The Rubie inspired team won the first three ends but had been pegged back to a single shot lead after five. They then pushed the lead to 11 – 5 a couple of ends later only to have Owen’s team breathing down their necks at the halfway stage. Paul’s team then edged out to a six shot lead to hold the upper hand with five to play. Team Williams did win three of those ends but it was not enough to bridge the gap; a win to Paul’s team by 18 – 14.
Paul, the victorious skipper!
On rink 2 of the Wilson Green, Dave Charlesworth, Terry Norwood and maestro Robin Staples faced off against Joel ‘Grr’ Hunt, Peter ‘Virgin ‘ Flight and skipper Bob Millichamp. Bob’s team made the better start leading 6 – 2 after four ends, but team Staples then had a successful short burst and the scores were tied at 7 all after eight ends. From that point however, it was all team Millichamp! Apart from a number of good ends from lead Dave, team Staples seemed all at sea on the slow, bumpy grass and could get no consistency into the game at all. Not so Bob’s team, especially Bob himself who bowled superbly. They won eleven of the last thirteen ends to sail home comfortable victors at 27 – 9. Ouch!!
On rink 3, Grahame ‘pop’ Denman, Graham ‘jockey’ Hunt and Arny ‘blackfeet’ Lenczuk battled against Mike ‘fish’ Hook, Mark ‘rowdy’ Rundle and that wily leftie Bob Edwards. Both sides won early ends for the scores to be 3 all after five ends. However, Bob’s team then asserted some authority over the game to win eight of the next nine ends and roar (literally!) to a dominant position. This burst included a five shotter and a four shotter so the lead was huge at 18 – 4. Unfortunately for Arny’s team they could get no traction at all, while Mark in particular was having a blinder. Despite dropping a couple of ends, team Edwards sailed home to a very comfortable victory at 27 – 7. Another ouch!
On the next rink, Harold ‘stentless’ Wall, Col ‘Hawaii’ Stone and Steven ‘suave’ Goddard (fresh from cruising) played Bill Meredith, Denis ‘rowdy’ Lees and gentleman Jim Starkey. With both sides feeling their way on the grass, the score was 5 – 4 in favour of Jim’s team after five ends. With a two shotter on the next end, Jim’s team led 7 – 4, but they were not aware of the drubbing that was to follow. Unfortunately for team Starkey, that was to be the end of their scoring! Yep, Steven’s team won the last fifteen ends on the trot to run out winners by 30 – 7. Wow, yet another ouch, although you had plenty of company Jim!
Despite the rumour, Harold doesn’t need a stent to play bowls!
In the final game, Ian ‘smooth’ Duncan, Richard ‘denman’ Denman, and the evergreen cobbler Gordon Lewis faced off against against Russel Dunstan, Joe O’Donnell and Peter ‘miraculous’ Morales. And, as with most of the matches, this one started with both sides scoring early to have the game tied at 5 all after five ends. Gordon’s team then pushed out to a lead of 12 – 5 after eight and looked in control. However, when they dropped a massive eye-watering seven, yep, a seven on the tenth end, they were behind by three shots! But, with the cobbler in charge, they clawed their way back to the lead and again looked good at 22 – 15. However, they were up against the miraculous one who kept firing in those blue bowls and coming up with results. Peter’s team hit the lead with two ends to play, but Gordon wouldn’t roll over and his team tied things up after 21 ends. Playing a deciding end, it was the Morales led team that grabbed a couple of shots and victory at 27 – 25. Thank goodness for a close game!! But that 7 shotter . . . oh, ouch!!
The weighted shot master on the mat, Peter Morales!
