Wednesday Social Bowls
And what a cracking day weather-wise was Wednesday 22nd! The sun shone all afternoon and the breeze was not much more than a zephyr fluttering the flags. The conditions were terrific, and there were no excuses for any wayward bowls. Thirty-seven bowlers turned out on this perfect bowling day, so the Match Committee arranged two games of pairs and five of triples, although one of the triples matches needed a swing bowler. Included in the numbers were newcomers Tony Mahon and Graham Bond as well as our Cranbourne visitors Gwen and Rob Scott.
On rink 13 of the Waratah Green, Grahame Denman was swing bowler for Paul McInerney and Owen ‘wily’ Williams on the one hand and Joe O’Donnell and Peter ‘miraculous’ Morales on the other. Despite dropping three shots on the first end, Peter’s team roared out to a 7 – 3 lead after four ends. With some solid bowling, they kept the pressure on their opponents and by the ninth end were in a commanding position at 16 – 5. However, the wily Owen then rallied his team and they won the next five ends to hit the lead by a shot. The ‘miraculous’ one then steadied his troops and they dominated the last seven ends to get home at 24 – 20.
Peter ‘miraculous’ Morales on the mat!
In a pairs game on rink 12, the newcomers Graham Bond and Tony Mahon were leads to Mick ‘potters’ Flynn and Rob Scott. Both sides got onto the scorecard early for Mick’s team to lead 4 – 3 after five ends. The sides then shared the next four ends which saw Rob’s team ahead by a single shot. It was then that Mick’s team got the better of their opposition and pushed out to a solid lead. This they held through to the twenty-first end where they ran out victors by 22 – 12. Reports were that the newcomers came through their initiation well and are eager to get back onto the green. Congrats to Mick and Rob for schooling Graham and Tony in their first hit out.
Mick Flynn had a good day while tutoring the newcomers!
In a triples match on rink 11, Barry Werfel, Mike Hook and Mike Holmewood battled against Joel ‘Grr’ Hunt, Russell Dunstan and Clive ‘dasher’ Neutze. Mike’s team leapt from the blocks to win the first four ends and hold a comfortable lead of 9 – 0. However, Clive then got his team buzzing and by the eighth end had reduced the deficit to one shot at 9 – 10. Skipper Mike then hit top form and his team started to assert some authority over the match. Apart from one end when they dropped three shots, team Holmewood dominated the back half of the game to get home by 25 – 15.
Barry fired down some good bowls as lead!
On the next rink, Ted ‘Mr Ed’ McPhee, Mark ‘rowdy’ Rundle and the wily Bob Edwards faced off against Ian ‘cool’ Duncan, Peter ‘Virgin’ Flight and Steven ‘suave’ Goddard. In a rip-roaring opening to the game, Bob’s team burst to a lead of 10 – 1 after six ends and Steven’s team was reaching for the oxygen. The oxygen must have worked because the match was soon to be tied up at 10 all after ten ends. And when team Goddard amassed an eye-watering six shotter on the twelfth end, and followed that with a four on the next, they led by nine shots! What a turn-around! Bob’s team toiled hard and had the better of the run home but the deficit was too great to overcome. Steven’s team home 25 – 19.
Ian, the ‘cool’ one, is in great touch at the moment!
In the 18-ender on rink 9, John Fleming, Neville ‘the’ Tanner and ‘Junior’ Cummins battled against Keith ‘fox’ Edwards, birthday boy Bill ‘the’ Pope and Paul ‘ricochet’ Rubie. Despite dropping a four shotter on the first end, Junior’s team were soon into stride to win six ends on the trot and lead 9 – 4. However the smiles were wiped from their faces when Mr Ricochet’s team nabbed a mouth-watering, scintillating six shotter on the eighth end. Time to reach for the defib! If they did grab for something it didn’t work as Pauls’ team showed no compassion as they pushed ahead. And to rub salt into the gaping wound of defeat, team Rubie grabbed a massive five shotter on the last end. Victory by 26 – 16, and bragging and exaggeration continued in the clubhouse!
Birthday boy Bill was a winner!
On rink 8, Jill Harwood, Arny ‘man in black’ Lenczuk and Chris ‘irrepressible’ Forrester took on Denis ‘rowdy’ Lees, ‘gentleman’ Don Chapman and the maestro Robin Staples. Chris’ team won the first three ends to lead 6 – 0 and had the skipper worrying about holding on to the lead. However, there wasn’t a lot to worry about as his team then led 11 – 2 after nine ends. As the game moved into the second half, Chris’ team still led but a short burst by team Staples had them to within four shots. So with five ends to play, they were still in the game and Chris’ lead had shrunk! However, Chris steadied his team, they won four of those last five ends ends and took victory at 20 – 12. Word was that Arny played a big role in keeping his team in front throughout the match.
Arny had his Rosie bowls working well on the day!
In the other pairs game this one on rink 7, Richard Denman and Stephen Day battled for honours against Gwen Scott and Terry Norwood. Richard and Steve won the first end but Gwen and Terry were soon into stride and by the seventh end were comfortably in the lead by 9 – 2. They then had extended the lead by the eleventh end, and when they racked up a scintillating six shotter on the twelfth end they had a massive lead of 18 – 4. Richard and Steve hung in tenaciously but it seemed that anything they did was more than matched by the opposition most of the time. The final score in favour of Gwen and Terry was 29 – 12.
