Nepean Highlander Regional Events
State Fours
BBC entered the team of Al McGhee, Terry Butt, Craig Norman and Mick Anderson in the inaugural Regional event on Saturday July 6th. Unfortunately for the boys they were knocked out in the first round.
Senior Fours
BBC entered two teams in this event and, unfortunately (fortunately ?!) they were drawn to play each other in the first round. The team of Ash Lewis, Stephen Della, Mick Spong and Mick Armstrong defeated the other Bowral side of Bob Crowley, Jim Neely, Greg Lewis and Kev Stafford 23 – 14. The Mick Armstrong led team then went on to have an impressive win in the quarter final over the strong Austral outfit by 23 – 13. Mick, Ash, Stephen and Mick will now compete in the the semi-final at Bargo on Saturday July 13th commencing at 8.30am. Our best wishes go with them!
Social Bowls Saturday
Fourteen hardy souls turned out for social bowls on a very chilly Saturday afternoon. The Match Committee organised two games of pairs and one of triples, and although the weather made things a real challenge, all games got through the full twenty-one ends.
On rink 8, Graham Hartnup and the venerable cobbler Gordon Lewis took on Richard ‘denman’ Denman and ‘potters’ Mick Flynn. Despite the cold and the breeze, both teams won early ends for the score to be 4 all after six. Gordon and Graham then won four ends to set up a handy lead of 10 – 4, and were all smiles. Although Mick and Richard then edged back into the game, team Lewis still led 12 – 7 after fourteen ends. And then, Gordon and Graham fell into a deep hole . . . a very deep hole! In a total fade-out, they failed to win another end, as Richard and Mick rolled on their merry way. Enjoying their new-found form, they stormed home to an impressive 21 – 12 victory.
Despite one horrible ‘denman’, Richard had a fine game.
On the next rink, Ian ‘cool-one’ Duncan and the suave Steven Goddard battled things out against Terry Norwood and Dave Coltman. Ends were very tight at the start as only singles were scored on the first six ends, and the score was locked up at 3 all. The scoring then lifted a little, but the difference between the sides was still only one shot, 9 – 8 to team Goddard after eleven ends. And then Steven and Ian really got into the groove; some excellent draw bowling from them both had their opponents searching for some divine intervention! Dave and Terry weren’t bowling badly; Steven and Ian were simply bowling extremely well! Totally on top, Ian and Steven won eight of the last ten ends to blitz their opponents and win handsomely by 29 – 10.
The ‘cool-one’, Ian consistently out-bowled his opposite number!
In the triples game on rink 10 (the favourite rink of the ambidextrous one!), Keith ‘fox’ Edwards, visitor Charlie Dunn and Arny ‘man in black’ Lenczuk faced off against Grahame ‘pop’ Denman, Peter ‘ambi-d’ Flight and the mercurial Chris Forrester. In a close opening to the match, both sides scored early and it was 4 all after seven ends. It was then that Arny’s team started to dominate the scoring; with ‘the fox’ either on the jack or the next green, Charlie in the general vicinity and Arny cajoling his blood-coloured bowls, they lost only three ends from the eighth to the twenty-first! The final score was a most impressive (or depressing, depending on your view) 23 – 8! Apparently the ‘lucky’ rink didn’t help the ‘ambi-d’ one very much at all!
The ‘man in black’ had a busy day sweet-talking his bowls!
