BBC BROADCAST WEDNESDAY JULY 17th (Terry Norwood at the desk)
It’s good to be back on the air after that glitch in the system. Some general info to begin with:
- It was great to see Billy Pope back on the green after his recent visit to hospital. With four stents now in place, Bill was back in action in the 18-ender on Wednesday. With all that oxygen now pumping through his system he was a force to be reckoned with. Great to see Bill.
- A reminder that the AGM of the Men’s Bowling Committee will be held at 10am on Sunday August 18th. Nominations close on Sunday 21st July so there is not long to get some names in front of the members. All positions of President, Vice-President (2), Bowls Secretary and Committee Member (6) are open for nomination.
- The first BBC event for the year (23/24) will be the RSL Shield to be played over the weekends 17th, 24th and 31st of August. Intending participants enter as pairs and the Committee then matches the pairs randomly to share the talents amongst the teams. The first day will be fours matches, the second singles and triples and the final day pairs. It’s an interesting format and makes for good competition.
- The Regional triples nominations schedule is now on the notice board for those wishing to enter this competition. Nominations close at 5pm Monday July 22nd so there isn’t much time left to get yourself involved.
Social Bowls Wednesday 17th
Thirty-one eager bowlers turned out on a day of mixed weather; mostly not good weather mixed with worse! The stiff, very chilly breeze kept bowlers well and truly on their toes, but could not however, be blamed for those snakey bowls that found their way onto the adjacent rinks! Four games of triples (one with swinger) and two of pairs were organised by the Match Committee.
On rink 7 Peter ‘ambi’ Flight and Joe O’Donnell took on gentleman Don Chapman and the ‘commodore’ Peter Watson. Both teams scored early and the game was tied up at 5 all after seven ends. It was still close at 10 – 9 to team O’Donnell after ten ends but from that point Peter and Joe gained the upper hand. They won seven of the last nine ends to run out emphatic victors by 21 – 11.
In a pairs game on rink 8 Reta South and Bob ‘wily’ Edwards battled for supremacy against Ian ‘cool one’ Duncan and Terry Norwood. This was a game in which one side was fairly much on top from the outset. Although the score was close at 4 – 2 after four ends, Ian and Terry won seven of the next eight ends to have their opposition calling for divine intervention. With both Ian and terry bowling especially well, they went on to a crushing 23 – 6 win after eighteen ends.
The ‘cool one’ had a good day as lead!
In the 18-ender on rink 9, Bill ‘the’ Pope was swing for Keith ‘where’s me wallet’ Edwards and junior Cummins on the one hand and John Fleming and Paul ‘ricochet’ Rubie on the other. Junior’s team leapt out of the blocks to lead 8 – 2 after six ends, but three ends later were behind 8 – 11! And then, in another turnaround, team Cummins won the next five ends so that when time was called because of the freezing drizzle, they were in front 16 – 11.
Great to see the Pope back in action!
In a triples game on rink 10, Ted ‘Mr Ed’ McPhee, Charles Coode and Chris ‘mercurial’ Forrester faced off against Grahame ‘pop’ Denman, Mark ‘rowdy’ Rundle and the suave one Steven Goddard. Steven got his team off to a storming start to lead 7 – 2 after five ends. Three ends later Chris’ team was in the lead at 8 – 7 and it was game on! After fourteen ends team Forrester led 16 – 12, but Steven’s men won the next six ends on the trot to lead 20 – 16 with one to play. In a nail-biter, they held on to win by a shot at 20 – 19.
In another triples game, Joel ‘Grr’ Hunt, Richard ‘denman’ Denman and Steven ‘makeover’ Day tussled against Alex Christlo, Graham ‘jockey’ Hunt and Mick ‘potters’ Flynn. And what a cracking game this was! Joel had another blinder and newcomer Alex wasn’t far behind with his wide-looping bowls. All others had their moments in this very tight one. Six all after eight ends, this one was sixteen all with one to play; and Stephen’s team took the last end to run out 18 – 16 victors.
The green bowls are in hibernation as ‘makeover’ Steve sent down the yellows!
In the final game, Jill Harwood, Russell Dunstan and the venerable cobbler Gordon Lewis took on Rowena Coode, Barry ‘smurf’ Werfel and the maestro Robin Staples. Robin’s team had the better of the opening to lead 8 – 3 after six ends. Gordon then rallied his team, shrugged off the weather and won seven of the next eight ends to lead 13 – 9. And then that hole opened again; his team dropped a five shotter on the next and could win only one more end as Robin’s team stormed home to an impressive 25 – 14 victory.
Barry is in pretty good touch at present!
