Social Bowls Saturday July 20th

Appalling weather greeted the nine courageous, hardy, (dim-witted, moronic!!) individuals who hit the Waratah Green on Saturday afternoon! Who would prefer to sit by the fire when you could be out in gale-force winds of minus 12 degrees and the thermometer reading 5?!? Well, all but nine chose to sit by the fire and shake their heads at the folly of the nine nincompoops who clearly had nothing better to do than offer their bodies as test cases in arctic weather. To satisfy the nine, a game of triples with swing bowler and a game of pairs were organised. In anticipation of keeping the bowls on the green, the games were run east west, into and against the gale. Ditch bowls were common with the wind and wide, short ones into it. Oh, what a sight!!

In the triples game, Grahame Denman was swing lead for Richard ‘denman’ Denman and Clive ‘dasher’ Neutze on the one side and Terry Norwood and Mick ‘potters’ Flynn on the other. The pick of the bowlers was Richard who, despite a couple of ‘denmans’ managed to get those black bowls somewhere near the jack some of the time. Clive too had some good ends and Mick slipped the odd one in as well. Overall though, the influence of Richard meant that team Neutze was well in front 20 – 13 when the sleet finished the game at 18 ends. Enjoy the photos that Robin Staples shot!!!

Richard, Clive and Grahame fighting the wind . . . the wind . . . and the wind!

Mick and Terry feeling the cold and losing the battle!?!

In the pairs game Bob ‘chin-sock’ Crowley and the venerable cobbler Gordon Lewis took on Arny ‘Rosie’ Lenczuk and the suave one Steven Goddard. All except the cobbler struggled in the conditions; Bob had his beard in his eyes most of the time, Arny gave up sweet-talking ‘Rosie’ and started to growl at her ineptness and Steven’s blue bolters clearly behaved as if they had minds of their own disobeying the instructions of their owner. All the while, Gordon went on his merry way thriving in the conditions and putting the others to shame. So enthusiastic about the conditions was this four that they pushed the game out to twenty-five ends, and, to Gordon’s delight the score favoured him 28 – 15.

‘Chin-sock’ and ‘Rosie’ . . . the ‘suave one’ . . . and ‘chin-sock’ braving the elements!

The Master . . . the nonagenarian cobbler Gordon mastering the elements!!!
