Social Bowls

Sixteen eager bowlers turned out for social bowls on Saturday. The weather was excellent to begin with, but, unfortunately, slowly deteriorated as the afternoon progressed and was very cold at the close. The Match Committee organised two games of triples and one of pairs.

On rink 10, Steven ‘suave’ Goddard and Alistair McGhee battled against Peter ‘ambi’ Flight and the ebullient Bob Crowley. And what a rip/roaring game this was! Alistair and Steven won three of the first four ends to lead 5 – 2, but a sizzling five shotter to Bob and Peter on the sixth saw the lead change. By the seventh end Al and Steven had edged their noses in front again but their time in the lead was short because they immediately gave up three shots. After the twelfth end, Bob and Peter led by a shot and then they ran five ends together and took a strangle hold on the game. Al and Steven won a couple of the closing ends but Peter and Bob were never really troubled and were nine shot winners at 25 – 16. All bowlers had their moments, but Bob spent time on the jack and Peter had a blinder!

The big man had a big game . . . good one Bob!

In the triples game on rink 9, Barry ‘smurfel’ Werfel, Richard ‘denman’ Denman and the irrepressible Chris Forrester faced off against Ted ‘Mr Ed’ McPhee, Graham Hartnup and Stephen ‘makeover’ Day. In an excellent opening few ends, Chris’ team shone and led 6 – 1 after four. However, with skipper Stephen urging on the ever keen ‘barry’ McPhee, team Day had a field day over the next seven ends winning six of them and leaving the opposition floundering at 15 – 7. The back half of the game then saw Chris’ team hold their own, but scoring mostly singles meant that they were not able to make up any ground on the front running team Day. ‘barry’ McPhee had a very handy game as lead for the victors, Graham and Richard headbutted equally while Steve pipped Chris as skipper. 20 – 15 was the final score.

‘Barry’ McPhee, sometimes known as Ted, had a very solid game!

In the final game on rink 8, Jill Harwood, Terry ‘PNE’ Norwood and Mick ‘the potter’ Flynn battled for honours against Grahame ‘pop’ Denman, Keith ‘the fox’ Edwards and the evergreen cobbler Gordon Lewis. Unexpectedly, this match turned out to be a very one sided affair with Mick’s team sailing off leaving the opposition in their wake. They jumped ahead at the start to lead 6 – 1 after four ends, and then led 16 – 3 after nine. It was then a case of ‘catch me if you can’! And, unfortunately for Gordon’s team, they couldn’t! With Jill having a stunning, ‘best ever’ game as lead and skipper Mick rarely failing to get one on the jack (“oh not again,” moaning Grahame . . . not again . . . and not again . . .), team Flynn coasted home to a comfortable victory. The final score was 33 – 9!

As skipper, Mick had a blinder of a game!
