BBC BROADCAST SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 21st (Terry Norwood at the desk)
Starting with some information and reminders:
- Reminding all Rookies, those members who started bowling after 1st January 2021, that the entry schedule for the Rookie Singles competition is posted on the notice board. This competition will be run as a mid-week event commencing on Wednesday October 9th. Nominations close at 5pm on Tuesday October 1st, so, come on Rookies, get yourself listed in this competition.
- Both Women and Men bowlers are reminded that the Mixed Pairs Championship entry form is also posted on the notice board awaiting your entries. The first round of this competition will be run on Sunday October 13th. Entries will close at 5pm on Saturday October 5th.
- With Spring now here, it is likely that bowlers will be making greater use of the shade cloth at the ends of the rinks. Please remember that, if you do pull out the shade sections, you are responsible for ensuring that it is rewound after you complete you game/rollup. This will help the club get greater wear out of the material.
- Also, bowlers have been asked to return the orange/yellow ‘bowls in the ditch’ markers to the bucket in the mat box when your game has been completed. It seems that children visiting for parties etc see them as toys and are scattering them around the greens randomly. In terms of preservation, it seems sensible that we ‘hide’ them from mischievous eyes and more mischievous fingers!
Social Bowls Saturday
The weather wasn’t the kindest for bowls on Saturday with a nasty wind gusting across the Waratah Green. The direction was anything between South, through West, to North, and all directions in between!! Most unfriendly to bowlers! Twelve hardy souls braved the conditions, so the Match Committee organised two games of triples.
On rink 9, Barry ‘smerfel’ Werfel, Terry Norwood and that wily leftie Bob Edwards battled against Keith ‘the fox’ Edwards, Dave ‘pot black’ Charlesworth and the admiral Peter Watson. Bob’s team had the better of the opening ends to lead 4 – 1 after four. This they continued until the eighth end when, without warning and most uncharacteristically, the admiral pulled rank, blasted the head with a drive, scattered the bowls, grabbed 5 shots and took the lead! Wow! Regaining composure, Bob’s men managed to square the score on the tenth, but Peter’s team wasn’t to be upstaged and pushed out to a three shot lead on the fourteenth end. However, with heads down and tails up the Edwards trio found much better form, outbowled their opposite numbers, dominated the ends and ground out a solid victory at 20 – 13. Tough going in tough conditions!
In the game on rink 10, newcomer Bruce Yahl, Peter ‘ambi’ Flight and the venerable cobbler Gordon Lewis faced off against Graham ‘hardnut’ Hartnup, Arnold ‘rosie’ Lenczuk and another wily leftie Mick ‘potters’ Flynn. And in a stirring start, three shotters on the second, fourth and sixth ends to Mick’s team had them nicely in front at 9 – 5. However, team Lewis hit back with a three of their own as well as a double to square the match at 10 all on the ninth end. A couple of ends later this game was then hit with a cyclone . . . Cyclone Gordon to be precise! With the gale in their sails, Gordon’s team won six ends on the trot, including an eye-watering six shotter, to lead massively at 25 – 11. Wow indeed! Mick’s men did put up solid resistance over the last few ends to reduce the deficit but the victory was decisive at 27 – 19. There was some good bowls played in the conditions, and old heads were very impressed with newcomer Bruce.
