BBC BROADCAST WEEKEND JANUARY 11/12th

BBC BROADCAST WEEKEND JANUARY 11/12th       (Terry Norwood at the desk)

Some nibbles, the main course below:

  1. The Club Major Fours Championship final was completed over the weekend and the outcome can be found below. Also played was the final of the Major Fours Plate, the playoff between the first round losing teams, and again the report is below.
  2. All bowlers are notified that the Wilson Green is closed for bowls until further notice. Management has engaged the greenkeeper to undertake an upgrade which should take four weeks, weather permitting. Barefoot bowls will shift to the Lewis Green.
  3. The pennants selectors, under the leadership of Robin Staples, have now organised the teams for the pennants trial games on Saturday January 18th commencing at 12.30. It is essential for all bowlers who listed their names as interested in playing pennants to now check the notice board. Please tick off your name if available, or notify Robin (or one of the selectors Gail Fraser, Graham Hunt, Peter Flight) immediately if unavailable so that a replacement can be organised.
  4. And a further reminder that the Chris Benton Charity day has been postponed until May. The Men’s Bowling Committee is looking at Saturday May 8th, but this is yet to be confirmed.
  5. Bowlers are reminded that the blue rink markers are not for rubbish. Could you please use the garbage bin which is placed near the corner of the Waratah Green close to rink 7. Any rubbish placed in the rink markers has to be cleared out by members of the committee who’d rather get on with other tasks.

Main Course – Weekend Bowls

The final of the Major Fours Championship and the Fours Plate were set down for 12.30 on Saturday but, unfortunately, the weather intervened. Solid rain on Friday night and continuous rain on Saturday morning meant that at midday on Saturday the Waratah Green was half/two thirds under water. As a result, the Match Committee shifted the games to Sunday in the hope for better weather. Fortunately, the weather cleared and a perfect day presented itself at 10.30 on Sunday.

Major Fours Championship Final

On rink 8, Gordon Lewis, Stephen Della, Ash Lewis and Mick Spong battled for top honours against Scott Kennon, Dave Coltman, Al McGhee and Dugald Braithwaite. Mick and his men made a fine start to lead 5 – 0 after two ends. Unfazed, Dugald’s team snatched a massive five on the third and followed up with a couple of singles to lead 7 – 5. A three end run then had Mick’s team back in the lead, but by the eleventh it was 13 all. With Dugald’s men then edging their opponents, team Braithwaite had a four end steak to put itself in a strong position at 21 – 14 with five ends to play. Far from done, maestro Mick fired up his men and by the nineteenth had regained the lead by a shot. On the twentieth end, a fortunate rub gave Dugald the equalling shot, so it was 22 all going into the last. Down on the twenty-first, Dugald brilliantly killed the end, and the replay then headed back to the Clubhouse. Up one on a fairly loose head, Dugald played the draw of the day with his last bowl to a centimetre behind the jack. Unfortunately for team Spong, Mick’s weighted last bowl missed the kitty and the honours of the day went to team Braithwaite. What a cracking game! Final score 24 – 22.

Fours Plate Final

On rink 10, Graham Hunt, Don Chapman, Terry Norwood and Robin Staples took on Stephen Day, Reta South, Chris Forrester and Bob Edwards. Despite dropping a shot on the first end, Robin’s team was soon into stride and led 5 – 1 after five ends. Bob’s team then hit back to level at 5 all after seven, but with Don in fine form and skipper Robin in superb touch, team Staples went on a seven end winning streak to lead 14 – 5 after fourteen ends. In fact, Robin’s bowling was exquisite; more than half a dozen times he drew his final bowl to the jack or trailed it away from the opposition bowls to those of his own team. Magnificent for his side, but probably galling for his opponents!! Matters didn’t change over the final third of the match and when time was called after twenty ends the score was 19 – 8. Robin and Don were the standouts for the victors, while Stephen and Reta gave their side some fine starts.
