BBC BROADCAST WEDNESDAY JANUARY 15th (Terry Norwood at the desk)
Some bits of info before we move on to social bowls:
- The pennants season for Bowral Bowling Club has now been clarified and we can move forward. We have been withdrawn from grade three so grade six is the only side we shall be entering. Trial games have been organised for this coming Saturday the 18th commencing at 12.30, and most bowlers selected to play have now indicated availability. If you listed your name for pennants and are not sure about Saturday please check the notice board as a matter of some urgency to have things sorted.
- The Men’s Bowling Committee met yesterday, Wednesday, and draft minutes of that meeting will be posted on the notice board by Saturday at the latest. As a reminder, the members of the committee are Terry Norwood (President), Peter Flight (Vice- President), Robin Staples (Treasurer), Chris Forrester, Ted McPhee, Ian Duncan, Richard Denman, Graham Hunt and ex officio Gordon Lewis.
- And a further reminder that the Wilson Green is under repair and will be out of action for quite some weeks. In the interim, barefoot bowls will shift to the Lewis Green. All social and competition bowls will be played on the Waratah Green.
- The Men’s Bowling Committee wishes to thank bowlers for rewinding the shade cloth after games. It’s rare for any section of the cloth to be left wound out, and this is most helpful in preserving the shade cloth. Thank you, let’s keep it up!
Wednesday Social Bowls
Thirty-two eager bowlers were listed for play on what was a very hot humid day. The forecast was for a possible storm later in the day but at 12.30, there wasn’t any sign of cloud. However, as the day progressed, the cloud did build up and the breeze cooled slightly, although not enough to provide much relief. Given the heat, the Match Committee tried to make better use of the shade facilities by running bowls east-west instead of north-south. This meant the the shade cloth was available at both ends of the green. With thirty-two bowlers, four games of triples and two of pairs were organised.
In the 18-ender on rink 7, the ‘Johns’ Fleming and Cummins battled for bragging rights against Bill ‘the’ Pope and Paul ‘ricochet’ Rubie. Bill and Paul leapt from the blocks, well, perhaps strolled from the blocks to lead 5 – 1 after five ends. Completely unfazed, the Johns won the next three ends to hit the lead at 6 – 5. They then pushed the score to 9 – 6, only to drop a three on the twelfth and have scores squared up. At that point, the heat was starting to take its toll, so the boys agreed that the bar was preferable. Bragging rights shared at 9 all.
On rink 8, Grahame ‘dragon’ Denman, Bill ’emeritus’ Meredith and Robin ‘Maestro’ Staples took on Shane ‘newbie’ Harvey, Wal ‘speckles’ Markow and Arnie ‘dickie knee’ Lenczuk. Both sides scored early in a tight opening and the card read 5 – 4 to Arnie’s team after five ends. Robin’s team then edged to the lead so that after nine ends, they led 9 – 5. They continued to lead as things progressed, 12 – 6 after thirteen and 14 – 10 after sixteen, and looked in control. But no, Arnie’s team swooped, grabbed a four shotter and a five, so that when time was called after eighteen ends, Arnie and his boys were in front 19 – 14. A warning to all; Arnie’s teams are developing a habit of late comebacks!
Really, a ‘dickie knee’ Arnie??
On the next rink, Mark ‘straw’ Barrow, Mike ‘fish’ Hook and Owen ‘wily’ Williams faced off against Jim Larkin, Harold ‘still stentless’ Wall and Richard ‘denman’ Denman. Both sides won early ends for the scores to be locked at 4 all after five. Owen’s team then won five of the next six ends to have a handy lead of 10 – 5 entering the back half of the match. They still led at 12 – 8 after fifteen and 14 – 11 with one end to play and were in the box seat. However, in a storming finish, Richard’s team snaffled a four shotter on the last and plucked victory from the jaws of defeat; the ‘dragon’ was sure to hear about that in the car on the way home!
Style! Richard’s team got home with a huge last end!
On rink 10, Joel ‘grr’ Hunt, Nev ‘the’ Tanner and the evergreen cobbler Gordon Lewis butted heads against Jill ‘hollywood’ Harwood, Peter ‘Virgin’ Flight and Stephen ‘makeover’ Day. Stephen’s team opened with a three shotter but by the sixth end trailed 4 – 5. Gordon’s team was still in front after the eighth, but trouble was just around the corner; trouble in the form of a belting! Stephen’s team belted them winning seven of the next eight ends and ground team Lewis into submission! And the salt in the wound was a five shotter to team Day on the last. A belting and a half with a final score of 29 – 14; ouch! Not much ‘grr’ from team Lewis in this game!
Old photo, but the yellow perils still work a belting!
In a three-bowl pairs game on rink 11, Alex ‘wides’ Christlo and the irrepressible Chris Forrester battled for honours against Ted ‘Mr Ed’ McPhee and Terry ‘puff’ Norwood. Chris and Alex won the first couple of ends but by the sixth were under pressure at 3 – 7 down. They got the score to 6 – 7 after eight and 10 – 13 after thirteen but from there, their opponents flexed some muscle and applied the screws. With Ted outpointing Alex and his skip chipping in, team Norwood dominated the back half to get home 25 – 12. How sweet was the beer, especially the one Ted thought was his!!
Ted is starting to work some magic with the stick!
In the final game on rink 12, Denis ‘rowdy’ Lees, Don ‘gentleman’ Chapman and the wily Bob Edwards took on Barb Wainberg, Ian ‘cool’ Duncan and Mick ‘potty potters’ Flynn. After dropping a shot on the first end, Bob’s team then went on to win the next ten ends and lead 15 – 1! Perhaps it was the heat, maybe a lack of oxygen . . . some were thinking it might be a job for the defibrillator! Well in the second half, the haemorrhaging was slowed and Mick’s team had slightly the better of matters. Only slightly though, as Bob’s team got home comfortably at 22 – 11.
