Social Bowls Saturday

Seventeen bowlers turned out for bowls on what was a perfect day weather-wise. The sun was shining and a gentle breeze was keeping the bowlers nicely refreshed, so there were no excuses for any wayward bowls. The group was delighted to welcome visitor Chris Day, brother of member Stephen, who is down for a break from Bundaberg!

In a 25-ender on rink 8, Arnie ‘munch’ Lenczuk, Owen ‘wily’ Williams and the effervescent one Chris Forrester battled for honours against Jill ‘hollywood’ Harwood, Terry ‘puff’ Norwood and the maestro Robin Staples. With Jill in exceptional touch, Robin’s team had the better of the opening to lead 4 – 1 after five ends. Although ends were tight, team Staples continued to get the better of their opponents to lead 13 – 5 after thirteen. Robin was bowling excellently and kept baling his team out if they didn’t have a shot on the jack. Chris’ team hung in well and in fact had slightly the better of the back half cutting the deficit to five. The final score was 23 – 18 in a game where the star was Jill; she had a blinder of a game!

In another two-bowl triples game on rink 9, Barb Wainberg, Mick ‘potty potters’ Flynn and skipper Bob Edwards took on Ian ‘mr cool’ Duncan, Peter ‘Virgin’ Flight and the evergreen cobbler Gordon Lewis. In a startling first end, Bob’s team belted the opposition with a mouth-watering five shotter and had the opposition well and truly stunned. However, Gordon and his boys got their heads down and by the eighth end had squared the score at 8 all. From there it was nip and tuck, although the well-oiled Lewis machine kept ahead on the scorecard. Bob’s team did have a solid run to be within four on the twenty-fourth end, but Gordon’s boys shut them out with a three on the last. What a good game and although Gordon’s team won 27 – 20, team Edwards won the ends 13 – 12!!

On rink 12, Al McGhee was swing bowler for Chris and Stephen ‘makeover’ Day on the one hand, and Mark ‘wheel’ Barrow and Richard ‘denman’ Denman on the other. Although team Denman leapt from the blocks to lead 4 – 1 after three ends, the Day side was soon into stride and strung together a run of six ends for a lead of 9 – 4. And, unfortunately for Richard’s team, matters didn’t change much as the game entered the second half. Team Denman managed to win only three ends on the run home, as the opposition continued to pile on the points. The final score of 26 – 10 was a clear indication of the dominance of the Day led combo. Well done fellows!

In the final match, a triples on rink 11, Grahame ‘dragon’ Denman, Mike ‘grappling’ Hook and ‘the admiral’ Peter Watson grappled for ascendency against Keith ‘foxy’ Edwards, Barry ‘smerfel’ Werfel and Viv ‘top’ Gear. And what a cracking game this turned out to be! Peter’s team got the jump on the opposition early to lead 9 – 3 after six ends, and they  then continued to dominate and pushed the lead to an impressive 13 – 4 after ten. However, just when a casual observer might write them off, the Viv led trio burst into action – they steadily reeled in the opposition so that by the twentieth end it was 18 all. And in a terrific finish, Viv’s team completed the comeback with a double on the last end. What a beauty!
