BBC BROADCAST WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 5th (Terry Norwood at the desk)
Some bits of info for a start:
- Weather permitting, Grade Six Pennants will continue this Saturday with the Bowral side playing host to Bargo. After the huge win last Saturday, Bowral sits atop the competition ladder and is hopeful of a solid showing this week. The three teams for Bowral are unchanged from the first round, but we need confirmation of availability asap in the usual manner of ticking off your name on the notice board.
- Given that the Pennants games will take up three rinks, there will be a couple of rinks for social bowlers on Saturday, so get your names down should you be interested.
- Committee member Ian Duncan has been working feverishly on a survey to be sent out to all financial bowling members in the near future. The Men’s Bowling Committee is seeking the views of members on a range of issues so that we can attempt to take the bowling club forward. We’re hoping to collect and collate the information electronically, but there will be a paper version for those for whom we don’t have email addresses.
- And a thank you; on the last couple of bowling days, the shade cloth has been rewound after the games as requested and the Match Committee thanks bowlers for that. Let’s keep that going, if you roll it out, you roll it back after the game.
- Unfortunately, we are still struggling with waste being deposited in the blue rink markers rather than the garbage bin on the corner of the green near the Club entrance door. We’ve got better, but still not perfect. It’s only a short walk to the bin, so let’s all get used to it!
Social Bowls Wednesday
Thirty-four eager bowlers were all stripped ready to roll on yesterday when drizzly rain frustrated everyone keeping them under cover. After fifteen minutes of waiting, the Match Committee decided to cancel the official bowling but invite all to wait out the rain (which the bureau indicated would stop around 1.30) and have ‘unofficial’ games of social bowls. On cue, the rain ceased around 1.30, and the twenty-two who’d remained launched into action. After the re-arrangement of players, there were four games of pairs and one of triples.
On rink 8, Barb Wainberg and Mick ‘potters’ Flynn took on Ted ‘mr ed’ McPhee and Terry ‘puff’ Norwood. Barb and Mick grabbed the first couple of ends, but by the sixth there was only one shot separating the teams. By the eleventh end, Mick and Barb still held a one shot lead, but a run of three ends saw Ted and Terry take the lead. The sides then became locked in a close battle and there was still only one shot difference with two ends to play. In a very tight finish, Ted and Terry held on by taking singles and ending in front 20 – 17. There was some fine bowling with all having their moments, especially Ted and Barb who had a great battle as leads.
On rink 9, Joel ‘grr’ Hunt and Wal ‘speckles’ Markow had a ding dong battle against Graham ‘hardnut’ Hartnup and Dave ‘pot black’ Charlesworth. And what a battle the two leads had in this matchup! Time and again one would be on the jack (as in right on the jack!) and the other would take it away. It was high quality lead bowling from Graham and Joel, as neither would concede an inch to the other. And the skips joined in the fun as well, sometimes adding to the score, and sometimes . . . not adding . . . but! Anyway, what a cracking game this was and I wish I could give you the final score, but unfortunately the card escaped!!
On the next rink, Paul McInerney and Joe ‘skip’ O’Donnell set out to teach a lesson to Jill ‘hollywood’ Harwood and Ian ‘mr cool’ Duncan. Ian and Jill got the jump on Paul and Joe to lead 6 – 1 after three ends, but then fell into a gaping hole to loose the next six ends. However, rather than surrender, Jill and Ian grabbed the next three ends and were within a shot of their opponents. And when they snatched a four shotter on the seventeenth, they hit the lead 17 – 16. Game on!! However, Joe and Paul steadied, won the next three ends and led by three with one to play. In a ripper of a finish, Jill and Ian had a great end but fell one short when they could manage only a double. Cracking game!
In the pairs match on rink 11, Peter ‘Virgin’ Flight and the evergreen cobbler Gordon Lewis battled for supremacy against Graham ‘leaning tower’ Hunt and Chris ‘effervescent’ Forrester. And in a very hard hitting, take no prisoners opening Peter and Gordon blitzed the other pair taking the first five ends to lead 11 – 0! Ouch, where was the oxygen! Graham and Chris finally got onto the scorecard but by the twelfth end they were still behind 5 – 17! Perhaps it was divine intervention (perhaps not!), but Chris and Graham won four of the next five ends and were back in the game at 15 – 19 with four ends to play. But no, the wily cobbler was too experienced to let this one slip, and he and Peter ground out a solid 24 – 16 victory.
In the only triples match, Alex ‘wides’ Christlo, Owen ‘wily’ Williams and the maestro Robin Staples faced the challenge of Barry ‘smerfel’ Werfel, Arnie ‘dickie knee’ Lenczuk and Steve ‘makeover’ Day. In a dominant opening, Robin and his team swamped the opposition to take seven of the opening eight ends and lead 13 – 1. And with all members of team Staples besting their opposite number this domination continued fairly much throughout the entire game. Even when Stephen’s team won end they were restricted to a single such was the power of the opposition. When time was called after twenty ends, it was team Staples by 25 – 6.
