BBC BROADCAST WEDNESDAY APRIL 16th (Terry Norwood at the desk)
Some starters before something more substantial:
- All members wish Keith Edwards a happy birthday as he clocks up 94 years on the 16th! Keith is getting towards the end of a spell in hospital and should be back home after Easter. With a little luck he should be able to join us on the green before too long. Everyone might like to keep Keith in their thoughts as he convalesces over the next couple of weeks.
- The next major competition to be conducted will be the Bowral Bowling Club Major Triples and this will take place in May commencing on the 10th. The entry sheet is on the notice board and bowlers are encouraged to get organised and get names listed. As a Club Championship event, this is open to women bowlers as well as the men. Come on bowlers, get organised and get yourself entered!
- Also on the notice board is an entry sheet for a pairs event to be staged in June. Open to men and women, bowlers enter by listing names individually so that the Match Committee can form pairs of approximately equal ability. It should be a lot of fun, so we are looking for lots of names.
- Again, on the notice board is an entry form for the ‘Can Assist’ charity day to be organised by the Women’s Bowling Club committee. This event is also open to men so, come on gents, let’s get behind this terrific event and get names down.
- The Regional Pennants competition is now nearing its conclusion with the final round to be played on April 26th. Currently, the Bowral Grade Six side is in second position and, unfortunately, is unable to catch the leaders Picton Razorbacks. While offering congratulations to Picton, Bowral is very keen to defeat Robertson on the 26th and hold onto second place.
Social Bowls Wednesday
A very pleasant day greeted the thirty-two bowlers who turned out for social bowls on Wednesday. It was a little warmer than had been predicted and the breeze was only a bit of a pest rather than a real nuisance. This breeze certainly couldn’t be blamed for those few bowls that snaked their way onto the neighbouring rinks! With thirty-two bowlers, the Match Committee organised two games of pairs and four of triples.
In a pairs match on rink 7, Wal ‘speckles’ Markow and Clive ‘dasher’ Neutze battled against Alex ‘wides’ Christlo and Viv ‘fourth’ Gear. Although the scores were 3 all after three ends, Alex and Viv won the next four ends to lead solidly at 10 – 3. They then pushed this to 11 – 5 and were all smiles. However, Wal and Clive had other ideas, found their touch and ran together five ends to snatch the lead at 13 – 11. And then, with the scores locked at 13 all, Clive and Wal grabbed a mouth-watering six shotter and looked to be in control. Not so, because, unintimidated, Viv and Alex won the next five ends to have the match at 19 all with one to play. In a ripper of a last end, Alex played the shot of the game to pinch the jack, and the match, from Clive’s grasp. A cracker of a game with the final score 21 – 19 to Viv and Alex.
Alex won the game with a wide-swinging forehand!
On the next rink, Graham ‘leaning tower’ Hunt, Ian ‘mr cool’ Duncan and the ebullient Chris Forrester took on Barb ‘stretch’ Wainberg, Mike ‘grappling’ Hook and Mick ‘potters’ Flynn. In an astonishing opening end, Mick’s team grabbed a six and had the opposition gaping open mouthed! However, Chris’ team got onto the scorecard on the next two ends but by the eleventh end were behind 3 – 17! Wow, time for the old fashioned smelling salts . . . or something . . . anything! Chris’ team did win the next three ends but after that they fizzled and could muster up only one more shot. With Barb and Mick having big games and Mike chipping in, team Flynn went on its merry way collecting shots, and more shots! The final score was 27 – 10 in something close to a belting . . . nah, it WAS a belting!
The wily potter Mick Flynn engineered a big win for his team!
On rink 9, Terry ‘puff’ Norwood and Stephen ‘makeover’ Day faced off against Bruce ‘scratched’ Yahl and Bob ‘wily’ Edwards. And what a tight match this turned out to be! All but two ends resulted in singles as these two sides ground away at each other over twenty-one ends. Terry and Steve had the better of the opening to lead 5 – 1 after six ends. However, Bruce and Bob then turned the tables to run together six ends and lead 7 – 5 after twelve. And then came the first multiple score when Steve and Terry grabbed four on the thirteenth, and this gave them the lead. However, Bob and Bruce nabbed their own four shotter on the sixteenth to recapture the lead in a see-sawing game. Steve and Terry hung in to level the scores at 13 all with the last end to play. And it was Steve who drew the winner for 14 – 13 in a ripper of a game. All bowlers had their moments, but none was better than big Bob Edwards!
Bob was in great form in a close encounter!
In another triples game, Grahame ‘dragon’ Denman, Denis ‘rowdy’ Lees and Joe ‘skip’ O’Donnell tussled against Mark ‘straw’ Barrow, Mark ‘noisy’ Rundle and Dave ‘pot black’ Charlesworth. In an astonishing start to the game, Dave’s team won end . . . after end . . . after end!! Ten in fact; ten uninterrupted ends including two eye-watering six shotters to lead twenty-seven blot! And then Joe’s team got on the scorecard with a magnificent four on the eleventh end . . . phew!! However, it was a one-off as Dave’s team picked up the scoring again albeit mostly singles. Nothing much would fall the way of team O’Donnell, although from twenty- seven to zero down they all but matched the opposition at eight shots to nine . . . something to take the game.
On rink 11, Joel ‘grr’ Hunt, Paul ‘ricochet’ Rubie and the evergreen cobbler Gordon Lewis battled for honours against Shane ‘newknee’ Harvey, Neville ‘the’ Tanner and Peter ‘miraculous’ Morales. Both sides had early success and the score was 4 all after six ends. Peter’s team then edged in front but a sudden burst from Gordon’s team saw them surge to a 14 – 8 lead after eleven. By the fourteenth end, Gordon’s boys had the upper hand at 18 – 11 and were looking the goods. And then the miracle man and his team worked some magic to win five of the next six ends and so hold a two shot lead with one end to play. And then, in a last gasp effort, Gordon’s team crowded the jack and grabbed a four shotter to snatch victory. The final score in favour of team Lewis was 24 – 22 in a great game.
Gordon got his team home in a great close game!
In the final match, newcomer Clive Huchens, Graham ‘hardnut’ Hartnup and John ‘junior’ Cummins tussled for bragging rights against Jill ‘Hollywood’ Harwood, Barry ‘smerfel’ Werfel and the wily Owen Williams. Despite dropping three shots on the opening two ends, Owen’s team soon flexed their muscles and took over the scoring. They won seven ends on the trot to set up an impressive lead of 14 – 2 and have the opposition scratching their heads. The scratching worked as Junior’s team then staunched the bleeding briefly to reduce the deficit to single a figure. However, from there all they could see was the rear end of the opposition as Owen’s team picked up the scoring and continued of its merry way. The final score in their favour was 28 – 11, and losing skipper Junior was full of praise for Jill whom he said caused his team no end of trouble!
Jill had a great game for the victors!
