- Bowers are reminded that with the new financial year having commenced, annual fees are due. You can pay those at the bar, and new membership cards will be available before too long.
Rookie Singles Competition
The semi-finals of this ‘first to 25’ event were played in sunny, pleasant conditions on Saturday before some very interested spectators.
In the match on rink 8, Barb Wainberg battled for honours against Denis Lees, and Barb made the early strike taking the first two ends and collecting three shots. Denis then found better range to lead 6 – 3 after five ends, but by the ninth end, Barb was back in front 8 – 6. At that point, Denis hit some fine form to run together five of the next six ends and led 14 – 9. This then moved to 15 – 12 as Barb grabbed some singles, but Denis then swooped. Whatever Barb put down, Denis was able to better and he won the next five ends to take out the game 25 – 12.
In the other game on rink 9, Mark Barrow took on newcomer Tisi Lear and Tisi notched up singles on the first two ends to shake out some of the nerves. Mark then found his touch and by the seventh end led 8 – 3. Not to be denied, Tisi hung in well at this stage and by the twelfth end there was only one shot difference at 10 – 9 to Mark. From there, Mark’s extra experience began to show as he won five of the next six ends and forged to a commanding lead of 21 – 11. Although Tisi battled hard, Mark was not to be denied and finally ran out victor at 25 – 12.

The style that put Mark into the final!
So, the final set down for Sunday July 13th, will be between Mark Barrow and Denis Lees. Bowl well gentlemen!
Saturday Social Bowls
With sixteen bowlers listed for social bowls, the Match Committee organised two games of triples and one of pairs.
In the pairs game on rink 10, Ian ‘Mr Cool’ Duncan and the effervescent Chris Forrester challenged Peter ‘Virgin’ Flight and the evergreen cobbler Gordon Lewis, and although they dropped a double on the first end Chris and Ian grabbed 6, 2, 4, 3, and a single on the next five ends to have the opposition gasping for breath and on their knees! This was then advanced to 22 – 4 on the twelfth end, and it was getting close to applying the ‘mercy rule’!! Ah, but never write off Gordon Lewis . . . he and Peter launched a comeback grabbing 3, 6, 2 and 6, a seventeen shot haul in four ends to be within one shot! By the eighteenth end it was 23 all and the cobbler was on the prowl. Un panicked, Ian and Chris steadied, grabbed a four and, to their great relief, held on to win in a cricket score match at 29 – 25!

The delivery of the mercurial Chris Forrester!
In the triples game on rink 11, Grahame ‘dragon’ Denman, Peter ‘admiral’ Watson and coach extraordinaire Robin Staples tussled for honours against Barry ‘smerfel’ Werfel, Richard ‘ten pin head’ Denman and Rowena ‘secret’ Coode, and in a very tight opening each side notched up a single to get onto the scorecard. Robin’s team then grabbed an impressive three shotter, but by the fifth end were only one in front at 4 – 3. Ends continued to be tight and shots scarce, so that, by the ninth end, scores were locked at 6 all. Team Staples then won five of the next six ends, all singles to lead 11 – 7, but Rowena’s group then scored 3, 2 and a single to hit the lead. Robin’s team got the score to 13 all, but couldn’t hold on as Barry, Richard and Rowena slipped away to victory at 17 – 13.

Rowena and her team edged the opposition in a close encounter!
In the final game on rink 12, Jill ‘Hollywood’ Harwood, Charles ‘morse’ Coode and the very wily Bob Edwards jousted with Peter ‘senior’ Marshall, Arnie ‘dickie knee’ Lenczuk and Mick ‘potters’ Flynn. It was Mick’s team that ground out the early ends and they led 4 – 2 after five until Bob’s trio ran together four ends and held sway at 11 – 4. Having much the better of proceedings, Bob’s team then drove the score out to 22 – 5 and the oxygen cylinder might be rolled in to inflate the flagging opposition. However, the cylinder wasn’t needed as Mick’s team knuckled down to win six of the last seven ends and at least reached double figures. This was a game in which the weight of scoring in each end differed for the two sides; Mick’s team topping the ends 11 to 10, but going down by ten shots at 24 – 14. C’est la vie!

The Bob Edwards follow through!
