BBC BROADCAST WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 17th

BBC BROADCAST WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 17th         (Terry Norwood at the desk)

Some bits and bobs to begin with:

  1. The Men’s Championship Pairs commences on Saturday September 20th with the playing of four first round matches. Set down for the Wilson Green at 12.30, these games should make very good watching.
  2. The ‘Foss Awards’, a new competition sponsored by the evergreen nonagenarian Gordon Lewis, will commence next Wednesday the 24th of September. This is an event for all Wednesday bowlers who will accumulate points given the results of their Wednesday social bowls matches. The more matches each bowler plays, the more opportunities there are to notch up wins and clock up points. So, come on bowlers, get yourselves on the green on Wednesdays over the next few weeks and give it a crack!
  3. The RSL Shield competition came to a conclusion last Saturday with the playing of the pairs matches. In the end, it was a very close competition with the team led by Mick Flynn/Gail Fraser squeezing home by a single shot from the four led by Ash Lewis; and two shots further back was the Robin Staples led team. It was great event and congratulations to all who kept the bowls rolling.
  4. Congratulations to the Women’s Bowling Committee headed by Gail Fraser and Lynne Boshier for the organisation of the Tulip Festival event which was run on September 11th. This was a terrific event, really well organised and well attended, so well done girls. The successful team was led by Scott Kelly from Bundanoon.
  5. The Men’s Bowling Committee executive will hold its next meeting on Wednesday September 24th. The draft minutes of that meeting will be posted as soon as possible following the meeting so keep your eyes peeled for those.

Social Bowls Wednesday 17th

On rink 3 of the Wilson Green, the trio of Col Stone, Denis ‘rowdy’ Lees and Viv Gear took on Alex Christlo, Barb Wainberg and John ‘junior’ Cummins and Viv’s team won three of the first four ends to lead 4 – 2. Stung into action, junior’s trio won the next three ends and, by the tenth end, the scores were locked at 9 all. It was then 10 all, followed by 13 all until team Gear edged to 19 – 16 after eighteen ends. And then CRASH!! The Gear led cart lost all its wheels in dropping seven . . . yes, readers SEVEN shots on the nineteenth! Wow!! But . . . not surrendering, Viv’s trio shook off the embarrassment, scored doubles on the next two ends, and ended up with a tied scoreline of 23 all! Phew!

In the triples game on rink 5, Ted ‘Mr Ed’ McPhee, Don Chapman and Steve Day battled for honours against Terry ‘pep’ Salter, Arnie Lenczuk and Gordon ‘cobblers’ Lewis and it was Steve’s team that burst from the blocks winning eight of the first nine ends to lead 9 – 1! Where were the smelling salts when a team was under the pump?! Very handy apparently, because captain Lewis stirred the team and they burst into action. Team Lewis won end after end crushing their opponents into submission. By the thirteenth end they hit the lead, and they were not about to let up. A 20 – 15 scoreline gave Gordon’s team the bragging rights.

On rink 8 of the Waratah Green, Mark ‘wheel’ Barrow, Graham Hartnup and Joe ‘rusty nail’ O’Donnell tussled against Shane Harvey, Graham ‘leaning tower’ Hunt and the wily Owen Williams and both sides won early ends for the score to be 3 all after four ends. A couple of three shotters and a four then propelled Joe’s team into a strong position, and, by the eleventh end, they led 15 – 6. The back half of the game was a much more even affair, but Owen and his boys were not able to really whittle away much of the deficit. They did get to within four shots with four ends to play, but Joe’s team edged away to a 21 – 15 final score.

In the final game on rink 9, Joel ‘ac/dc’ Hunt, Mike Hook and Robin Staples took the battle to Mark Shelvey, Richard Denman and Ross ‘clip’ Barber, and Robin’s team had slightly the better of the opening to lead 4 – 2 after four ends. However, team Barber then had the better of proceedings winning the next six ends and racing to a 13 – 4 lead! Far from done, Robin’s team found better form and slowly started to haul themselves back into the match in the back half. And when they cracked a sweet five shotter on the eighteenth end, they hit the lead! What a come back, and a four shotter on the twentieth end saw them home at 21 – 18!
