BBC BROADCAST SATURDAY OCTOBER 4th (Terry Norwood at the desk)
Some bits and bobs to begin with:
- The AGM of the Club Ltd will be held at 9.30am on Sunday October 12th. Hopefully a good number of members will be in attendance to support the Board.
- And in connection to the AGM, a quick reminder that there is a vote in process to fill the vacancy on the Board. Peter Flight, Vice-President of the Men’s Bowls Club, and Rowena Coode of the Women’s Club are candidates. It would be helpful for as many as possible members cast a vote at one of the times posted on the notice board.
- The FOSS ’25 Wednesday Bowlers competition has reached the halfway stage of the Triples ‘championship’, and Robin Staples is the current leader on 6 points. However, there are three bowlers on 5 points and another four on 4 breathing fire down his neck. Plenty can happen over the next two weeks so make sure you’re on the green!
- The draft minutes of the September 24th meeting of the Men’s Bowls Club executive are now posted on the notice board for your information. Also on the board are the June-September participation figures.

Saturday Social Bowls
Twenty-four bowlers turned out for a roll on a very pleasant Saturday afternoon. The bowlers were able to welcome new member Ben Goff who joins us from Sydney, and Ben soon showed that he is a very skilled exponent of the game. With very little wind to worry the bowlers and plenty of sun to soak up, the Wilson Green was a happy place for several hours.
On rink 3, Graham ‘leaning tower’ Hunt, Steve Day and Dugald Braithwaite battled against Peter ‘cancelled’ Flight, Gordon ‘cobblers’ Lewis and Oscar Whalin, and Dugald’s team struck early to lead 8 – 1 after five ends. Oscar’s team got the score to 6 – 9 with a four on the eighth end, but by the thirteenth they were in deep trouble at 6 – 20. However, Peter, Gordon and Oscar took up the challenge to win seven of the last nine ends and really put the cat amongst the pigeons. Despite the effort, the rush was too little, and Dugald’s trio held on to win 23 – 19.
On rink 4, Jill ‘Hollywood’ Harwood, Charles Coode and Mick Flynn took on Peter Marshall, Ian ‘Mr Cool’ Duncan and Terry Norwood and this was a tight affair from the start. In fact the first seven ends were singles, and throughout there were only four doubles and one three! The scores were 3 all, 5 all, 6 all and nine all on the fifteenth end. Mick’s team edged out to 12 – 10 on the eighteenth, only to see the opposition win the last three ends and get home 15 – 12. In this very close one, Jill had a solid game as lead and Ian rolled in some shots at vital times.
On the next rink of the Wilson Green, Mark ‘wheel’ Barrow, Graham Hartnup and Richard ‘ten-pin-head’ Denman faced off against Barb Wainberg, Mike ‘grappling’ Hook and Arnie Lenczuk, and both sides were on the card for the score to be 5 all after five ends. However, when Arnie’s trio won eight of the next eleven ends, they had charged to a 20 – 9 lead and looked in control. But, with Richard cracking the whip, team Denman set about the chase with a couple of three shotters. In a tight finish, Arnie’s team was able to hold on and took the honours at 22 – 18.
In the final game, Grahame Denman, Rowena ‘morse’ Coode and the wily Bob Edwards tussled against Ben Goff, Barry Werfel and the maestro Robin Staples, and Bob’s team won the opening to lead 5 – 1 after six ends. However, a SIX shotter to team Staples put some pep into their stride and the lead on the card! It was short lived however, as they managed to drop a five and trailed 12 – 15 after thirteen. They then wrestled the lead back and in a real dog-fight held on to keep the Edwards team at bay. 25 – 17 was the final score.
