BBC BROADCAST WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 15th

BBC BROADCAST WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 15th           (Terry Norwood at the desk)

Some bits and bobs to chew on as entrée:

  1. The mid-week Foss Trophy competition continued to its conclusion on the 15th, so you can catch more on that below!
  2. The Major Singles Championship will continue on the coming weekend with the playing of the quarter finals on Saturday afternoon from 12.30, and the semi-finals on Sunday morning. Hopefully, the wind will not be the issue it was for bowlers last weekend and that bowlers will be able to select a line confident that the bowl won’t waver! Anyone interested, will find reports of the round of sixteen games in the previous posting. All to be played on the Wilson Green, the quarter final games on the 18th will include Gordon Lewis Vs Dave Coltman, Noel Fraser Vs Terry Norwood, Al McGhee Vs Richard Denman and Dugald Braithwaite Vs Oscar Whalin or Ash Lewis (to be resolved Friday 17th at 3.30). There should be some very good bowling in these games for any interested viewer.
  3. The schedule for the Minor Singles competition is now posted on the notice board awaiting names. In an attempt to attract a large field, the Match Committee has allowed for mid-week matches as well as inviting women to compete. So, come on ladies and gents, get your names on the list and let’s have a ripper of a competition. The only bowlers not eligible to enter are those who have previously won this event, or have won either the Major Singles or the Major Pairs Championships.
  4. As a result of the unanimous agreement of the Board of the BBC Ltd, as well as the unanimous support of the Men’s Bowls Club Executive, we now have a new life member in Robin Staples! Hearty congratulations are due to this champion bowler, coach extraordinaire, relentless campaigner on behalf of bowls and thoroughly good bloke!
  5. For those who haven’t yet caught up with the result of the vote to fill the vacant position on the Board of the Club Ltd, Peter Flight was the successful candidate. Congratulations Peter, we know you’ll work hard for the success of the Club and bowls at Bowral.

Wednesday Social Bowls – The Spirit of Bowral FOSS Competition

Wednesday saw the final round of this mid-week triples competition when thirty-six bowlers took to the green on a wonderful sunny afternoon. Moving into this fourth round, the leader of the competition was Robin Staples on 8 points, closely followed by Joel Hunt and Don Chapman on 7 points. Breathing down the necks of these three were a number of bowlers quite able to leap-frog the leaders and take home the spoils should they have a really good day. As a reminder, the members of winning teams receive two competition points, with a bonus point being allocated to team members who win by 15 or more shots. One point is awarded to all bowlers in the case of a draw. As well as point allocations, a tally has been kept of the shots for each bowler to be used to separate any bowlers on equal points. So to the matches . . .

On rink 7, Terry Salter, Peter ‘top’ Flight and Richard Denman battled against Mark Shelvey, Rowena Coode and Viv ‘low’ Gear, and a five shotter of the fourth end got Viv’s trio on the card and into the lead at 5 – 3. It was short lived though, as Richard’s team ground out the ends to lead 14 – 9 at the halfway point. With Terry leading well, they continued to dominate and led 23 – 12 with four ends to play. To their credit, Viv’s team picked up five shots, but it was too little too late and team Denman got home 24 – 17 victors. So, 2 points went to Terry, Richard and Peter.

On the next rink, Ted ‘Mr Ed’ McPhee, Paul Rubie and Steve Day took on Grahame Denman, Peter ‘junior’ Martin and the wily Owen Williams and it was even-stevens at 4 all after five ends. In a game with some big scoring ends, it was 9 all after ten ends and 15 all after seventeen! And when Owen’s team cracked a four shotter on the nineteenth, they held a three shot lead. However, in a crushing final end, Steve’s boys grabbed a four shotter of their own and stormed home at 21 – 19! For the competition, Steve, Ted and Paul each grabbed 2 points.

On rink 9, Peter Marshall, Shane ‘manager extraordinaire’ Holland and Gordon ‘cobblers’ Lewis tussled for honours against Barb Wainberg, Joe ‘rusty nail’ O’Donnell and Mick Flynn and both sides made it onto the card early. It was then Mick’s team which cracked consecutive fours to lead 11 – 2 and have the opposition struggling. Gordon’s team did fare much better in the second half, but they were always chasing and not quite catching. Mick’s trio won the day, but Shane had a solid game for the losers and needs to talk the boss into more time on the green! 21 – 16 was the final score, so 2 points went to each of Mick, Joe and Barb.

In the next match, Joel ‘AC/DC’ Hunt, Col Stone and Arnie Lenczuk faced up to Wal Markow, Ian Duncan and the ebullient Chris Forrester and it was Arnie’s team that took the early lead at 5 – 2 on the sixth end. However, a four shotter on the next end got Chris’ team moving and by the fourteenth, it  was 10 all. This became 11 all, but a three shotter then gave Chris’ trio the lead which they extended to 17 – 12 at the end. Joel had yet another solid game, but it was skipper Chris who drove home the victory for the opposition. Two points then went to Wal, Chris and Ian.

On rink 11, Mike Hook, Charles ‘morse’ Coode and ‘junior’ Cummins tried to stare down Barry Werfel, Paul McInerney and Dave ‘pot black’ Charlesworth and in an ‘end for end’ opening, it was 6 all after six ends. This became 10 all after eleven, and then 14 all after fifteen, with three shotters being as common as singles! Still matching ends, and with only a one shot lead to Dave’s team, the win was there for the taking on the last . . . and Dave’s team grabbed it with a double, and delight! 21 – 18 to team Charlesworth, and 2 points to each of Barry, Paul and Dave.

In the final game on the outside rink, Shane Harvey, Neville Tanner and coach extraordinaire Robin Staples, battled for honours against Alex Christlo, Graham ‘leaning tower’ Hunt and Terry Norwood, and Terry’s team took the first four ends for a five shot lead. Robin’s team then found form and by the tenth end led 8 – 6. They still led into the back half, but a five shotter to team Norwood on the thirteenth put that team in front 13 – 9. Throughout much of the game, Alex was leading splendidly, while Neville was rolling in some fine draws to keep things evenly balanced. Terry’s team led by two after twenty, and in a very tight final end, grabbed a three and game! So, 2 points to each of Alex, Graham, and Terry.

What a terrific competition, and thanks to the evergreen Gordon Lewis for coming up with the idea of a mid-week event and agreeing to sponsor it with a trophy. Congratulations to our winner Robin Staples who set a very hot pace with big wins early, and then hung on as the leaders, including himself, wobbled in the final round! Stay tuned for the next running of the FOSS Trophy event which won’t be long coming because we plan to run it frequently!
