BBC BROADCAST WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 29th

BBC BROADCAST WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 29th         (Terry Norwood at the desk)

Some bits and bobs to chew on for a start:

  1. The Major Singles Championship concluded last Saturday with Dugald Braithwaite defeating Noel Fraser. A separate posting is on the site for those interested in the details.
  2. The Executive of the Men’s Bowls Committee held its latest meeting on the 29th at 10am. The draft minutes will be posted on the notice board very soon.
  3. It was agreed at the meeting that the Men’s Club would hold a working B shortly to attend to some minor maintenance and tidying around the Club. A date and time will be announced shortly.
  4. The Men’s committee has decided to proceed with the order of new shirts and this will be placed with the supplier asap. Hopefully, we’ll have these on bowler’s backs before Christmas.

Wednesday Social Bowls

Twenty-two hardy souls braved the cold, damp weather for a roll on Wednesday, with some of the regulars preferring the warmth of their living rooms. Light drizzle hampered bowling from time to time, but all the games reached a satisfactory end. Given the numbers, the Match Committee organised one game of pairs and three of triples.

In the pairs game, Ted ‘Mr Ed’ McPhee and Bob Edwards took on Barb Wainberg and Mick ‘potters’ Flynn, and Bob and Ted got the better of their opponents to lead 5 – 2 after four ends. In fact, they continued to outpoint Mick and Barb to lead 17 – 5 after twelve and, at that stage, seemed to have them on the ropes. Ted was having a blinder, and his skip wasn’t far behind him and their chat was focussed and confident. In the back half, Mick and Barb ran together three ends to show some spark, but Ted and Bob snuffed that out quite quickly. When rain called a halt after eighteen ends, it was Bob and Ted who were smiling at 21 – 9.

Birthday boy Ted had a blinder!

On rink 8, Shane Harvey, Arnie ‘dickie knee’ Lenczuk and Steve Day battled against Mike ‘grappling’ Hook, Owen Williams and Robin Staples and both sides notched up solid ends to get the game moving. As the game progressed, there was not a lot between the teams, and the scores were 6 all, 8 all and then 9 all after eleven ends. Slugging it out, these two teams were still locked after sixteen ends and all bowlers were wondering when the game breaker would hit. Well, it arrived on the twentieth with a three shotter to team Staples, which then rounded out the win at 18 – 13. Phew!

In the match on the next rink, Phil Payne, Terry Norwood and Joe ‘rusty nail’ O’Donnell were opposed to Grahame ‘dragon’ Denman, Neville Tanner and the cobbler Gordon Lewis and the score of 3 all after two ends gave no indication of what was to follow. From that point, Joe’s trio fell in a hole so deep there was no escape! The harder they tried, the worse they bowled and the deeper the hole became! Dreadful! Mind you, Gordon’s team all bowled well, far too well for their opponents with Grahame having a terrific game, and Gordon as well, and Neville chipped in regularly to make the opposition squirm all the more! The final score was 30 – 10! Ouch!

The ‘Dragon’ Grahame had a great game!

In the final match, Denis ‘rowdy’ Lees, Ian Duncan and the ebullient Chris Forrester tried to stare down Terry ‘pep’ Salter, Richard Denman and Ben Goff and it was Ben’s team that won the first two ends to shake off any nerves. Not intimated, Chris’ team then won the next five ends to lead 8 – 4, and showed they were ready for business. However, team Goff regained the lead at the halfway stage, and neither side was conceding anything to the other. The game had settled into a really close tussle, end for end stuff, and the scores were locked at 14 all after eighteen. Team Forrester then notched up three shots on the next two ends and, despite a strong challenge on the last, held on to get home 17 – 15. What a beauty!

And doesn’t Chris love to win a close game!
