BBC BROADCAST WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 5th (Terry Norwood at the desk)
Some bits and bobs to chew on as a start:
- The Minor Singles Competition begins on Saturday November 8th with the opening games rolling out on the Waratah Green. The second round is set down for the following Saturday, but keep in mind that, by arrangement, it is possible to play matches at other times.
- The draft minutes of the Men’s Bowling Club executive meeting of Wednesday October 29th have now been posted on the notice board for your information.
- Given the restoration of the northern and southern limits of the Wilson Green, bowlers are reminded that for the foreseeable future any bowling on that green is to be undertaken east – west. This will assist with recovery of the worn patches at the boundary areas.
- The first draw of the additional raffle prize took place after bowls on Wednesday and the lucky winner was delighted to know that bowls will be free next time round.
- And another reminder that the second round of the ‘Spirit of Bowral FOSS Award’ will commence on Wednesday November 19th and will run for four consecutive Wednesdays. So, come on bowlers, clear those Wednesdays and be on the green to be in it. As with the first round, teams and match-ups will be randomly drawn to give everyone as equal an opportunity as possible.
- It seems that the Club/Men’s Bowling Committee are quite close to signing up a new sponsor. The prospective sponsor was checking out the Club and a potential notice board location on Wednesday, so things seem to be moving forward. Fingers crossed!
- And Happy Birthday to the Committee’s very industrious scribe Ian Duncan who notches up a big round one on the 7th! Have a big one Mr Cool.
- Also celebrating a birth anniversary, this time on the 5th, was Club Board member Harold Wall. We hope you had a great day Harold.
Wednesday Social Bowls
Thirty-two bowlers lined up for social bowls on what was a great day to be on the green. The Match Committee organised two games of pairs as well as four games of triples.
In a triples game on rink 8, Col ‘Hawaii’ Stone, Ian Duncan and Dave Charlesworth took on Ted ‘Mr Ed’ McPhee Peter Flight and the evergreen cobbler Gordon Lewis, and what an opening this game had! Gordon’s team grabbed a massive six shotter on the first end and then followed up to lead 14 – 0 after four! But then things swung one-eighty with Dave’s team winning the next four ends and grabbing 11 shots! Wow, where was this game going! Well, a very determined Gordon then pushed his team out to 19 – 11 by the tenth, but then were walloped on the next five ends to trail 23 – 19! With neither side caving in, the match ground to the nineteenth with Dave’s trio up by one. And then, in a dogged finish, team Lewis grabbed a couple of singles to get home by a shot at 27 – 26! Phew!
On the next green, Charles ‘morse’ Coode, Mike Hook and Viv ‘top’ Gear battled against Mark Rundle, Graham ‘NZ bound’ Hunt and Joe O’Donnell and it was Joe’s team that had the better of the start to lead 6 – 2 after five ends. At that point, in quite a reversal, Viv’s trio dug in to win the next seven ends on the trot and led 12 – 6. Far from done, team O’Donnell then hit their straps to win the next six ends and take over the lead at 16 – 12! Great stuff! And then, giving themselves a lifeline, team Gear snaffled the next two ends to lead by one going into the last. With it all on the line, Joe’s team couldn’t find the right bowl as Viv’s trio grabbed a single on the last and so took home the goodies at 18 – 16.

Charles had a very solid game as lead for the victors!
In another triples game on rink 10, Barb Wainberg, Paul ‘ricochet’ Rubie and Steve Day faced off against Grahame ‘dragon’ Denman, Paul McInerney and the potter Mick Flynn and, after taking a single on the first, the team Flynn engine lost all its steam and really started to splutter!! With Barb leading very well for team Day and having plenty of shots in the head, Steve’s trio won the next seven ends and raced to a lead of 13 – 1. Mick’s team did then notch up a three, but then immediately dropped a four followed by a five to sink further into the quaggy mire. And the further the game went, the quaggier the mire became as nothing seemed to come off for Mick’s team. The final score to Steve’s team was 39 – 8.

The Steve Day style that kept his team on top!
The final triples game was on rink 15, Shane Harvey, Rowena Coode and the maestro Robin Staples shaped up against Mark ‘wheel’ Barrow, Arnie Lenczuk and the wily Owen Williams and it was Robin’s team that had much the better of the opening ends to lead 10 – 1 after seven. Stung into action, team Williams then hit back, taking eight of the next nine ends to hit the lead at 12 – 11. Robin’s team then ended the drought by grabbing a whopping five shotter to charge back into the lead, and after the nineteenth, two ends later led by five shots. And then to complete this topsy-turvy game, Owen’s team grabbed five shots on the last two ends for the game to end in a draw at 19 all! What a good one!

Owen’s team finished strongly to grab a draw!
In a pairs game on rink 12, Graham Hartnup and the ebullient Chris Forrester bumped up against Denis ‘rowdy’ Lees and Bob Edwards, and despite conceding a double on the second end, Chris and Graham charged out to a lead of 12 – 2 after six ends. Both Chris and Graham continued to have their opposite number under the pump, and they extended their lead to 17 – 3 after ten ends. It was then that Bob and Denis broke through to win four consecutive ends and looked to have some real fight in them. The comeback, however, spluttered to a halt as Chris and Graham started again to draw inside them, and, with an anything you can do I can do better performance, drove on to a very comfortable victory at 30 – 12.

Chris had another big win . . . and loved it!
In the other pairs game, Wal Markow and Terry Norwood squared off against Mark ‘skipper’ Shelvey and Richard Denman and it was Mark and Richard who took the initiative early to lead 6 – 2 after five ends. Much to their relief, Wal and Terry then found some better touch, and by the ninth, had levelled the match at 7 all. Ends were very tight with Mark drawing splendidly and all others bowling well. And nothing was to change as every end was hard fought and scoring continued to low. Richard and Mark crept out to 12 – 8, but, by the seventeenth, Wal and Terry had squared things off at 12 all. Mark and Richard then grabbed a double on the next end only to see Wal and Terry grind out the last three ends and a two shot victory. In a great game that went down to the very last bowl, Mark led brilliantly, Richard had a fine game and their opponents hung in well.
