BBC BROADCAST SATURDAY NOVEMBER 8th (Terry Norwood at the desk)
Nibbles to chew over for a start:
- The Minor Singles Competition got underway on Saturday with the playing of the first round matches. More on that below.
- The selectors are currently having discussions about the teams which will represent Bowral in the Southern Highlands Cup. This is an annual event involving Robertson, Bundanoon and Bowral who vie for the prestigious Eric Pain shield. Commencing on Sunday November 30th, the competition will include three rounds, one at each venue, with clubs being represented in triples (x 2) and pairs (x2). There will be more on this when the teams are selected and the competition gets underway.
- The Wilson Green continues to improve with the warmer weather seeming to have arrived. Bowlers, please keep in mind that for the time being, bowling will be east-west so that the boundary edges on the north and south have some time for bare patches to recover.
- Members are reminded that the draft minutes of the October meeting of the Men’s Bowling Committee executive are now posted on the notice board for your information.
- A LOST PROPERTY ALERT!! Member Owen Williams is looking for his club jacket which went astray last Wednesday 5th. Could bowlers from that day all please check any jacket you have to make sure you picked up the correct one after play.
- Members are reminded that, as in previous years, Graham Hartnup is able to provide people with the very popular Lions Christmas cake again in 2025. At $22, you can pick one up directly from Graham (0412604301) or over the bar at the club.
Minor Singles Competition
On rink 8 of the Waratah Green, Shane Harvey battled for honours against Graham Hartnup, and both bowlers had early success for the score to be 5 – 3 to Graham after five ends. The more experienced Graham then began to gain the upper hand and pushed his lead out to 13 – 4 after ten. Shane hung in well in his first competition appearance, but Graham was drawing too well for the newcomer to make much headway. Shane notched up the occasional end to keep Graham concentrating, but, in the end, Graham ground out a solid 25 – 8 victory.
In the match on rink 10, Rikki Wilson and Peter Flight faced off to see who would advance to the round of sixteen on November 15th, and the experienced Peter proved too powerful for the newcomer Rikki. Peter won the first five ends, accumulating a very handy twelve shots, but then Rikki found her length to win three of the next four ends. Peter pushed his lead to 21 – 3, only to see Rikki win five of six ends and give Peter something to think about. In the end though, experience told and Peter rounded out the victory at 25 – 12.
In the final game, Terry Norwood took on Terry Salter in the ‘battle of the Terrys’, and T Salter opened the scoring with a double on the first end. Not to be denied, T Norwood won the next three ends to lead 7 – 2, and then continued to pressure his opponent to lead 14 – 5 after nine. T Norwood then pushed the lead out to 22 – 8, and looked set for victory holding three very close shots on the next end. Under great pressure, T Salter pulled out the shot of the game with a resting toucher and grabbed three on the next end to keep the game alive. However, T Norwood recovered touch to take the win 25 – 12.
