BBC BROADCAST WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 19th (Terry Norwood at the desk)
Some bits and bobs to chew on for a start:
- Wednesday saw the first week of round two of the Gordon Lewis sponsored ‘Spirit of Bowral’ bowling competition for Wednesday social bowlers. More on that below.
- Time is short now for entries into the Major Fours Championship event to be staged in December. Come on bowlers, get talking, get organised and get yourself entered into this prestigious competition. Keep in mind, that first round losers will compete for the Fours Plate, so there’s plenty to play for.
- The quarter finals of the Minor Singles Competition will take place on Saturday rolling off at 12.30. The games will be Graham Hunt Vs Paul McInerney, Chris Forrester Vs Mike Hook, Ted McPhee Vs Charles Coode and Denis Lees Vs Terry Norwood. Bowl well fellows! And a reminder to Peter Marshall, Tisi Lear, Peter Flight and Richard Denman that you will be required for marking of the quarter final matches.
- The Wilson Green continues to improve with the weather warming up. Please keep in mind that when rolling up or playing on the Wilson, that play is to be east – west so that the north and south edges have more recovery time.
- And another reminder to anyone interested in purchasing a Lions Christmas cake this year that Graham Hartnup (0412604301) is the go-to man.
- Sunday November 30th will see the commencement of the Southern Highlands Cup involving Robertson, Bundanoon and Bowral. This first round will be hosted by Bowral with subsequent rounds being staged at Bundy and finally Robbo. Competition should be fierce so you will be kept up to date!
- And congratulations to Charles Coode, Neville Tanner, Steven Goddard, Ross Barber, Col Stone and Bob Edwards who took out the jackpot when the magic number 2 flashed up on the screen!
The ‘Spirit of Bowral’ Competition – The FOSS Awards
On Wednesday, social bowls became the start of the second round of the FOSS Awards, the spirit of Bowral Bowls Club competition sponsored by the venerable Gordon Lewis. For the next four weeks, teams will be randomly drawn as will the rinks on which the games are to be played. Members of the winning teams will be awarded two points, with one point going to all bowlers in any tied matches. If any team wins a match by fifteen or more shots, an additional point is awarded to those players. The Match Committee will also keep a tally of the shots scored in the games so that shots can be used to separate finishing positions if bowlers are tied on points. And so to the games in this first week of competition . . .
On rink 8, Graham ‘NZ’ Hunt, Mike Hook and the effervescent Chris Forrester took on Grahame Denman, Peter ‘Virgin’ Flight and John ‘junior’ Cummins and in a very tight opening it was 3 – 2 to Chris’ team after four ends. It was then, with Peter back to his best form, that junior’s team won seven of the next eight ends to move to a 10 – 4 lead. And battle as they might, team Forrester was just not able to pull them back. With junior barking the advice, team Cummins finally coasted home to a 17 – 11 victory, and so 2 competition points go to Grahame, Peter and junior along with the 17 shots, while 11 shots only go to Graham, Mike and Chris.
On the next rink, Ted ‘Mr Ed’ McPhee, Mark Rundle and Mick Flynn battled for points against Wal Markow, Paul McInerney and Peter ‘miraculous’ Morales and it was Peter’s team that leapt from the blocks to lead 11 – 5 after nine ends. With Peter then weaving plenty of bowling magic, his team continued to get the better of an opposition that could manage only an occasional single. Mick’s team did finally grab a four but this was on the twentieth, and the game was well and truly gone by then. The final score of 26 – 14 to team Morales gave Wal, Paul and Peter 2 competition points each along with the 26 shots, with 14 shots going to Ted, Mark and Mick.
On rink 10, Shane Harvey, Graham Hartnup and Clive ‘dasher’ Neutze faced up to Barry Werfel, Richard ‘ten pin’ Denman and Gordon ‘cobbler’ Lewis and team Lewis was on the front foot from the start leading 9 – 3 after eight ends. And despite the best efforts of team Neutze, things were not about to change. Barry, Richard and Gordon were all bowling really well and the pressure was relentless as they won end upon end. They stormed away to a huge 31 – 6 victory and collected 3 competition points each (including the bonus point for a 15+ victory) along with the shots – shots only to each of Clive, Shane and Graham. As a final note . . . demons must have buried themselves in this rink as five times bowls snaked off onto other rinks . . . very curious indeed!?!
In the next game, Joel ‘AC/DC’ Hunt, Dave Charlesworth and Viv ‘first’ Gear tussled for points against Barb Wainberg, Terry Norwood and Robin ‘maestro’ Staples and team Staples set the pace from the start to lead 10 – 2 after seven ends. With Barb outpointing lead specialist Joel and Robin rounding off ends brilliantly, team Staples had the spinnaker set and were in clear air! Try as they might, Joel, Dave and Viv were being dominated by their opposite number and just couldn’t make an impression on the game. In a masterly display, Robin had an absolute blinder of a game and led his team to a runaway victory of 40 – 5. So, 3 points (including a bonus point for the 15+ win) go to each of Barb, Terry and Robin along with a bag of shots.
In the final game, Charles ‘morse’ Coode, Ross ‘trim’ Barber and Steven Goddard took to the green against Col ‘Hawaii’ Stone, Neville Tanner and the wily Bob Edwards and it was Bob’s team that had much the better of the opening to lead 8 – 2 after six ends. This dominance continued into the second half of the match with the lead being eleven shots by the fifteenth and they looked set for victory. However, when some bowlers might think the game was gone, not so Steven, Ross and Charles! All lifted, rose to the challenge and battled back to within three shots with one end to play, and in a rattling last end grabbed a massive five shotter to complete the comeback at 23 – 21. Wow! So, 2 competition points go to each of Charles, Ross and Steven plus their shots, with shots only to the opposition.
So, after the first week of this round of the FOSS Awards, the leaders on 3 points and 40 points each are Robin, Barb and Terry, followed by Barry, Richard and Gordon on 3 points and 31 shots and a host of bowlers on 2 points!
