BBC BROADCAST SATURDAY DECEMBER 27th

BBC BROADCAST SATURDAY DECEMBER 27th         (Terry Norwood at the desk)

Juicy stuff to start with:

  1. A reminder that the Chris Benton Brain Cancer Charity Day is set down for February 7th, so, come on bowlers, get that day in your diaries and turn out for what is a terrific day. Money raised is matched by the Club Ltd in a donation to brain cancer research, so it’s a very worthy cause that we are supporting.
  2. The first round of the Consistency Singles Competition will be staged at 12.30 on Saturday January 3rd.  Bowlers with a bye in the first round (Robin Staples, Cameron New, Graham Hunt, Graham Hartnup, Wal Marko, Barb Wainberg, Shane Harvey, Clive Neutze) are reminded that they will be required for marking duty. Robin Staples has produced some tips for markers which will be distributed prior to the first round of games.
  3. The new uniforms have arrived, and Peter Flight is in the process of distributing those to both old and new members.
  4. Social bowls will be organised on the December 31st for those keen to have a roll and enjoy an end of year drink after the game. For those unable to make it, we thank you for your support throughout the year, and wish you a very safe and healthy 2026. Look forward to seeing you on the green!

Social Bowls Wednesday December 24th

Twenty bowlers turned our for social bowls on Christmas Eve, so there were two games of pairs and two of triples.

In a triples on rink 9, Clive Hutchens, Richard ‘ten pin’ Denman and Clive Neutze battled against Joel ‘AC/DC’ Hunt, Paul Rubie and Bob Edwards and Bob’s team led all the way to a convincing win. They led 6 – 0, 11 – 4, 20 – 8 and wound things up at 26 – 12. Apparently, the wily Bob had a very strong game, while new bowler Clive Hutchens looks to be settling in well.

In the next game, Barry Werfel, Graham ‘ex-NZ’ Hunt, and Chris Forrester bounced from the blocks against Grahame Denman, Mark ‘rowdy’ Rundle and Terry Norwood leading 10 – 1 after six ends. Terry’s team got the score to 10 – 8, but then it blew out to 18 – 9 and finished up 22 – 14 with Chris having one of his usual bonser games!

On rink 11, visitor from SA Charlie Dunn and Al McGhee found touch early against Peter ‘Virgin’ Flight and the evergreen cobbler Gordon Lewis to lead 11 – 1 after five ends. When the score reached 17 – 5 after eleven, Peter and Gordon were starting to choke on their water! They fared better in the second half, but honours went to Charlie and Al 23 – 13.

In the last game, Ted ‘Mr Ed’ McPhee and Barb Wainberg took on Mark Barrow and Peter ‘junior’ Martin with Peter and Mark on top in the first half leading 12 – 6 after eleven. However, that horrible pendulum got swinging and Ted and Barb started to claw their way back. Still four shots adrift on the eighteenth, Barb and Ted then blitzed the last three to fly home 21 – 17. (Sorry guys, now corrected from the wrong way round!)

Social Bowls Saturday December 27th

Shrugging off Christmas indulgences, ten slightly heavier bowlers decided the wonderful ‘spring’ day was too good to spend on the lounge or watching a dreary two-day cricket test match and so took to the Waratah Green.

On rink 8, Mark ‘wheel’ Barrow and Terry Norwood challenged Graham Hartnup and Dave ‘pot black’ Charlesworth to a game of two-four-two pairs, and despite a slow start, Graham and Dave had the scores at 6 all after eight ends. However, Mark and Terry finally got their act together, pushing the score to 15 – 9 and then 18 – 10 with three ends to play. The final score in their favour was 19 – 13.

In a triples match, Barry Werfel, Peter Flight and the maestro Robin Staples fancied their chances against Ian Duncan and the Lewises, Gordon and Greg . . . but it wasn’t to be! It was 5 all after seven ends,  and team Staples was only one shot off the pace after fourteen, but team Lewis steamed home taking the last six ends, the match and the bragging rights at 24 – 12.
