BBC BROADCAST SATURDAY FEBRUARY 21st

BBC BROADCAST SATURDAY FEBRUARY 21st         (Terry Norwood at the desk)

Some wholesome goodies to start with:

  1. The open gender Pennants season gets underway next Saturday February 28th with the Grade Six team at home to Camden Men’s BC and the Grade Seven team away to Robertson. The teams are now posted on the notice board and bowlers are asked to mark off names to indicate availability. Travelling sides need to organise cars and the Men’s Bowling Committee will provide petrol money. Bowl well and enjoy!
  2. The final trial matches for selection of Pennant teams were held on Saturday with a hit-out on the Wilson Green. More on that below.
  3. Smokers, we have been asked again to remind you to confine your smoking to the designated areas. We ask for your co-operation in keeping the bowling area as free from smoke as possible.
  4. Observant members will have noticed the that BBC has a new sponsor with the notice board at the eastern end of the Wilson Green now well adorned. Committee member Ian Duncan and GM Shane have been working hard to attract new sponsors, and we hope that this is the first of a stream of advertisers.
  5. The draft minutes of the last Men’s Bowling Committee meeting are now posted on the notice board. The next meeting will be held on Wednesday March 4th so we’ll keep you informed about where we are heading with our plans.
  6. And another reminder that the men’s Bowling Committee has BBC caps and bucket hats available at $25 each. Ian Duncan is the man to see and it’s a cash only arrangement.

Pennants Trial Games Saturday

On rink 3 of the Wilson Green, Tisi Lear, Barb Wainberg, Dave Coltman and Al McGhee dropped an horrendous seven shotter on the first end against an upbeat Noel Fraser, Jim Neely, Oscar Whalin and Ash Lewis. This great start by team Lewis stunned the opposition and they then raced out to a lead of 20 – 6 after nine ends and had team McGhee gasping! However, Al’s four kept working away, but found the going very tough against the well oiled Lewis outfit that matched most of what they could come up with. Al’s team did notch up 8 shots to 6 by Ash’s team over the last seven ends, but were much too far behind for that to make a difference on the scorecard. 31 – 16 was the final score to Ash and his men.

On the next rink, Arnie Lenczuk, Richard Denman, Mick Flynn and Gordon Lewis made a slow start against Reta South, Chris Forrester, Clive Neutze and Bob Edwards to trail 2 – 6 after six ends. However, they then really hit their straps to win eight of the next nine ends and storm to a 17 – 9 lead. Bob’s group then snaffled a couple of singles, but then dropped a full house of EIGHT shots on the nineteenth end!! Disaster for team Edwards and manna from heaven for Gordon’s men!! Ouch, and 8 shotter!! Relaxed with the win in the bag, Gordon’s team grabbed singles on the last two ends which allowed them to coast home to a comfortable 28 – 11 victory.

In the final game on rink 6, Dennis Beatty, Peter Martin, Mick Fisher and Dugald Braithwaite dropped a double on the first end against Ricci Wilson, Graham Hunt, Terry Norwood and Robin Staples, but then advanced to a lead of 10 – 3 after seven. Both teams were in good touch, but Dugald was tidying ends well for his team. And then, with Ricci leading the way, team Staples got more bowls in the head, and by the fourteenth end had ground their way back to level the scores at 15 apiece. Game on!! From that point, the ends were very tight with both sides having bowls in handy positions and shots were hard to come by. So tight in fact was the scoring that it was 18 all after twenty, and in a great final end, it was Robin’s team that grabbed the shot and the victory!
