BBC BROADCAST SATURDAY MARCH 14th

BBC BROADCAST SATURDAY MARCH 14th         (Terry Norwood at the desk)

In a sombre start to this broadcast, we inform all members of the passing of long-time member and bowler Harold Wall on Thursday 5th March. Harold was, and had been for some years, the Vice-Chairman of the Board of the BBC Ltd and a hard worker behind the scenes for the Board and the Men’s Bowls Committee. He will be sorely missed, and condolences are extended to his family and close friends. Harold will be farewelled in a private family service during next week. Vale Harold Wall.

  1. The second round of the Pennants season was held (commenced!!) on Saturday with Grade Six travelling to Taralga, and Grade Seven playing host to the Camden Men’s; more on that below.
  2. The draft minutes of the Men’s Bowls Committee executive’s meeting held on Wednesday March 4th are now posted on the notice board. Happy reading!
  3. Any member who’s thinking it’s time to have your hearing checked might consider visiting the ‘Centre for Hearing’ in Bowral which is a new sponsor of the Club. If you do call on them, make sure you mention being a member of the BBC to give them the positive feedback we’d like them to have.
  4. Thanks to ‘super scribe’ Ian Duncan, the latest edition of the newsletter ‘Jack Chat’ should now have reached your email inbox. If that hasn’t yet happened members, then drop Ian a line on ianmduncan1955@gmail.com and he’ll add you to the list!
  5. And a further reminder to any social bowler who would prefer to play over 18 ends on Wednesdays rather than the normal 21, to write 18 beside your name on the sign on sheet, or let the Match Committee know when you phone in. If there is enough of you, the Match Committee will make up a game.

Saturday Pennants

Unfortunately, both the match between Bowral Sixers and Taralga in Taralga, and the contest between Bowral Sevens and Camden Men’s in Bowral had to be halted about halfway through the games. These matches will now have to be resumed on Sunday March 22nd and, hopefully, played through to their conclusion. The selectors are in the process of checking on availability, and they might have to delve into the list of reserves to get all the teams onto the green. In the meantime, the progressive scores are presented below.

Grade Six

As one would expect, Taralga was proving a tough nut to crack on their home turf and Bowral was trailing by 8 shots overall when rain ended play for the day.

In the match on rink 3, Noel Fraser, Jim Neely, Ross Barber and Ash Lewis got off to a flyer against the Glenn Elliot led Taralga four to lead 13 – 0 after five ends. From that point however, the Taralga Tigers began to claw their way back into the match, and by the fifteenth end, when rain stopped play for the day, the Bowral lead had been reduced to seven shots at 18 – 11. Bowral will have a handy lead when play resumes on March 22nd.

On the next rink, Mick Fisher, Dennis Beatty, Peter Martin and Oscar Whalin were 5 all after five ends against the Taralga four led by the wily Geoff Croker. In a tight one, the score became 9 all after eleven ends, then 13 – 12 to Bowral three ends later. However, Taralga then hit hard collecting seven shots on the next two ends so that they led Bowral when play was halted by 19 – 13.

In the third match, Peter Flight, Barb Wainberg, Dave Coltman and Al McGhee started solidly to lead 6 – 5 after six ends, but a four shotter to Taralga on the next end gave the Bowral side a real wake-up call. The Stuart Hayman led Taralga unit them kept up the pressure and the Bowral four was only able to sneak a couple of singles before the rain arrived.  18 – 9 down, Al’s team has plenty of catching up to do when play resumes, but they can do it!

So overall, Bowral is trailing the Taralga outfit by 8 shots with seventeen ends to play. A solid start when the games resume, and Bowral will be right in the battle for the points. Come on, shots in the head guys!!

Grade Seven

In the game on rink 8, Arnie Lenczuk, Richard Denman, Mick Flynn and Gordon Lewis made a solid start to lead their Camden opponents 4 – 2 after five ends. However, the Camden boys then hit their straps to win four of the next five ends so that when the storm ended play for the afternoon Bowral was trailing 5 – 14! More bowls are needed in the head fellows so you can put some pressure on the visitors. Make them work for their shots!

On rink 9, Ted McPhee, Clive Neutze, Reta South and Bob Edwards began soundly to lead 6 – 4 after five ends but dropped a couple of costly triples on the seventh and eighth ends. When lightning stopped play after ten ends, Bob’s four was well in contention at 9 – 11. Come on guys, a few more bowls around the jack will help you to pressure the Camden four.

In the third game, Chris Forrester, Ricci Wilson, Terry Norwood and Robin Staples were locked at 3 all after four ends against their opponents, and then ran together four ends to lead 8 – 3. When play had to be abandoned for the day after nine ends, the Bowral four was leading 8 – 5, having dropped a double on the ninth. Chris was leading brilliantly, and Robin having his usual excellent game to keep Bowral geed up. Crowd the jack guys!

Overall then, Bowral trails the Camden team by 8 shots and has some work to do to claw their way back. However, there is half the match still to run, so some good form should see the Bowral side thereabouts after 63 ends!
