BBC BROADCAST WEEKEND JULY 11/12th

BBC BROADCAST WEEKEND JULY 11/12th           (Terry Norwood at the desk)

Some words of wisdom (or otherwise!) to begin with:

  1. The Men’s Bowling Committee Executive held its latest meeting on Saturday July 11th, and the draft minutes will be posted on the notice board as soon as available.
  2. The 65 and over singles competition continued on the weekend with the playing of the semi-finals. More on that below.
  3. Bowlers are reminded that membership fees for the new financial year are now due and can be paid over the bar at the Club. A simple form needs to be completed as part of the process and this also may be obtained from bar staff.
  4. Paid up members are reminded that the AGM of the Men’s Bowling Club will be held at 10am on the 8th August. Nominations will open shortly, so have a think about who you would like to run the Club over the next twelve months. All positions, (President, Vice-Presidents (2), Secretary, Treasurer, Committee members (5)) are open for election.
  5. The hard work of Committee Member Ian Duncan has led to having two new sponsors of the Club, Bowral Body Shop and Southside Stump Grinding. If any member notes a likely sponsor, please let Ian or one of the committee members know.

65 and Over Singles Competition

On a chilly but pleasant Saturday afternoon the semi-finals of this popular competition were staged. The Waratah Green was running at about 16 and the breeze was gentle, so the conditions were just about perfect for winter bowls in Bowral.

On rink 8, Peter Flight nabbed three shots on the first two ends against Dave Charlesworth but was soon under some pressure because Dave won six of the next seven ends to lead 11 – 3. It was then that Peter found some tidier form to peg Dave back to 8 – 12 six ends later, and when the score was 14 – 13 to Dave it was really game on! Dave grabbed a double on the next end, but Peter then swamped him with twelve shots over four ends to shut the game down emphatically. So Peter moves to the final with a semi victory of 25 – 16 under his belt.

On the next rink, Jim Neely and Robin Staples both opened confidently taking two ends each and Robin leading 4 – 3. This became 5 – 4 until Robin took over the running with superb draw bowling. End after end saw Robin on the jack and Jim battling hard to keep the damage to singles. A seven end run saw Robin at 19 – 4 and Jim, not bowling at all badly, really under the pump. However, Jim responded by taking four of the next five ends to be within seven at 15 – 22. But the maestro was not about to weaken, and he grabbed the three shots he needed to move to the final.

So, the final will be played next Saturday July 18th when Peter Flight and Robin Staples take to the Waratah Green at 12.30. It should be a cracker of a game and well worth watching! Bowl well chaps!

Visit of the Canterbury Leagues Social Bowlers Club

The BBC hosted a visit from the Canterbury group on Sunday 12th with sixteen local bowlers joining the group on the green and over lunch. The Canterbury Leagues Social Bowlers Club is actually a group of bowlers from a number of different bowling clubs of the St George/Sutherland region. It’s a disparate group of men and women of varying bowls talent who enjoy travelling to regional clubs to have a game of bowls and socialise. Triples matches were organised and these filled both the Waratah Green and the Wilson. Most games lasted 14/15 ends despite the arctic wind conditions, and everyone seemed to have a pleasant time. The Canterbury group is looking to a repeat visit in the warmer months sometime in 2027.

Social Bowls Wednesday July 8th

Despite threatening weather conditions, the Match Committee decided to go ahead with a mixed bowls day on Wednesday, and despite the odds, managed to get through the day relatively unscathed! Thirty-six bowlers had decided to brave the conditions so six games of triples were sent onto the Waratah Green. Six women were amongst the number along with a couple of visitors, Dan Hendrie and George Hindi.

On rink 8, Dan Hendrie, Neville Tanner and Chris ‘Tooheys Old’ Forrester bounced from the blocks against Elizabeth Hall, Mike ‘sharp’ Hook and the maestro Robin Staples to lead to lead 7 – 1 after four ends, but were soon reeled in and the game settled into a close tussle. Down by two shots with three ends to play, Robin’s team grabbed the final ends to win 18 – 15.

In the next game, Shane Harvey, Alice Moore and ‘the cobbler’ Gordon Lewis were under the pump early on against Paul McInerney, Rowena ‘morse’ Coode and Joe ‘rusty nail’ O’Donnell to be down 14 – 4 after eight. They did claw back to 14 – 9, but Joe’s trio had the better of the back half of the match and returned to the clubhouse 31 – 16 to the good.

On rink 10, Ian ‘smooth’ Duncan, Dave Charlesworth and Bob ‘wily’ Edwards grabbed a four shotter on the opening end against Shylie Brown, Graham ‘Pisa’ Hunt and Neil Puckeridge, and after six ends led 8 – 5. Another four shotter on the eighth jetted them further ahead, and, despite some earnest opposition, they ground out the back half to win by nine at 23 – 14.

In the game on rink 11, Arnie ‘dickie leg’ Lenczuk, Lynne Boshier and Ross ‘trim’ Barber nabbed a single on the first, but dropped the next four against Graham Hartnup, Paul ‘ricochet’ Rubie and George Hindi to be 1 – 5. However, they grabbed the initiative and with an EIGHT, (yes folks an 8 shotter on the twelfth) looked home! But, alas, they could win only one end after that and were buried by a four shotter on the last! Woe!! 21 – 19 to George’s team!

On the next rink, Peter ‘senior’ Marshall, Clive Hutchens and Peter ‘Virgin’ Flight led 6 – 2 early against Terry ‘pep’ Salter, Barb Wainberg and Mick ‘potters’ Flynn, but four ends later trailed 6 – 13! However, they got back on track and a real dogfight ensued. In the end, Mick’s team snaffled singles on the last three ends to earn bragging rights at 19 – 16.

In the final match, Grahame Denman, Denis ‘rowdy’ Lees and Clive ‘dasher’ Neutze trailed Elaine Jones, Mark ‘very rowdy’ Rundle and Owen ‘wily’ Williams early, but by the tenth end were all square at sevens. From there, Clive’s trio gradually got the better of the opposition and made it to the clubhouse 18 – 12 victors.
