BBC BROADCAST WEDNESDAY JULY 15th (Terry Norwood at the desk)
Some juicy morsels to get us started:
- The 65 and Over Competition has reached the final stage and the maestro Robin Staples will take on Peter ‘QANTAS’ Flight on Saturday July 18th at 12.30. The maestro is is terrific form at the moment but Peter has been in heavy training over the past couple of months and is raring to hit the green. There should be some great bowls to view for anyone who wants to slip on the shades and sip on a cold one (or two!).
- Coach extraordinaire Robin Staples has been putting together some tips for the benefit of us all. Coach’s Corner No 1 appears below.
- The maintenance of the greens has been under review by the Board of the Club Ltd and changes are to be implemented. The executive of the Men’s Bowling Committee is to meet with GM Shane on Wednesday 22nd of July to discuss future plans. Info from that meeting will be passed on as available.
- The draft minutes of the latest meeting (Saturday July 11th) of the Men’s Bowling Committee executive have now been posted on the notice board for your information. If you have any questions please feel free to speak with any member of the committee.
- Most 25/26 bowling members have now renewed membership for 26/27 and we appreciate your prompt action. As of a few days ago, we now have 60 paid up members on the books and are hopeful that a few more of those from last year will still come forward. $125, down from $170 last year because of the sponsorship Ian Duncan has drawn to the Club, will get you a year as a bowling member.
- Nominations for all positions on the Committee of the Men’s Bowling Club will open very soon so that, if there need to be elections, these can be organised prior to the AGM. So members, get thinking about who you wish to run the Men’s Club over the next 12 months!
Wednesday Social Bowls
Thirty-nine eager bowlers hit the green on what was a very pleasant winter afternoon in Bowral. The temperature hovered around 12, although the breeze which sprang up occasionally kept it a little below that at times. The Match Committee sent out one game of pairs and six of triples to test their skills.
In the pairs game on rink 5 of the Wilson Green, Newcomer Steve Bennett and Ross ‘just a trim’ Barber snatched a double of the first against Mark ‘wheel’ Barrow and Terry Norwood but slipped behind 2 – 5 after four ends. Steve and Ross then found the jack and edged to the lead by the tenth at 8 – 7. However, Mark then found some excellent form and he and Terry won six of the next seven ends to have a stranglehold on the match. From there they marched home 26 – 14 to the good. How good was that Hahn Lite!!
On rink 8 of the Waratah Green, Jill ‘Hollywood’ Harwood, Neville Tanner and Mick ‘potters’ Flynn nabbed a juicy three on the first end against Col ‘Hawaii’ Stone, Paul Rubie and Richard ‘gazelle’ Denman, but by the seventh end had slipped well behind at 4 – 12. Despite Mick’s urging, his trio were unable to get inside the Richard led team who continued to rake in the shots. The back half of the game saw no change and the Denman trolley rattled home well ahead of the opposition at 24 – 11.
With Clive Hutchens as swing lead, Arnie ‘dickie hammy’ Lenczuk and the dasher Clive Neutze made a flying start against Wal Markow and Denis ‘rowdy’ Lees to lead 7 – 3 after six ends. However their smiles turned to frowns when they dropped a monstrous FIVE shotter on the seventh, and by the eleventh were under the pump at 7 – 17. They got the score to 11 – 17, but when they dropped another FIVE shotter on the eighteenth, they were ripe for the pickings. Denis was all smiles to hand in the card showing a 28 – 16 victory.
On rink 10, Barry Werfel, Paul McInerney and the maestro Robin Staples were a little slow out of the blocks against Shane Harvey, Graham ‘Pisa’ Hunt and Neil Puckeridge to be 1 – 6 after four but then really got cracking. Paul found some great form as, of course, did Robin, and they made a real mess of the opposition taking twelve of the next thirteen ends and having them on their knees. ‘Smelling salts please!!’ To his credit Shane led well for Neil’s team, but the expertise of team Staples was overwhelming. 20 – 13 was the final score.
In the next game, Graham ‘shaken’ Bond, Charles Coode and Gordon ‘cobbler’ Lewis notched up doubles on the first two ends against Joel ‘AC/DC’ Hunt, Peter ‘QANTAS’ Flight and Steve Day but were swept aside on the following four ends to be 4 – 11, and gasping for breath! However, they then regained their composure and the game settled into a solid battle of exchanging ends. By the fifteenth end, Steve’s trio led by a shot, and with two ends to play the lead was two. And then, in a stunning finish, team Day grabbed seven shots and entered the clubhouse all smiles at 26 – 17.
On rink 12, Peter Marshall, Graham Hartnup and Viv ‘first’ Gear grabbed an enormous SIX shotter on the third end against Grahame ‘dragon’ Denman, Mike ‘fish’ Hook and Dave Charlesworth to lead 7 – 3. However, Dave’s team steadied with a single on the next end, and slowly worked their way back into the game. In fact, a treble on the tenth gave team Charlesworth the lead and the game settle into a real contest. Down the back straight, the teams were not far apart, and with three ends to play either side could grab victory . . . and this team was Dave’s as they snatched nine shots and finished 27 – 21 to the good.
In the final game, Terry ‘pep’ Salter, Ian Duncan and Owen ‘wily’ Williams snaffled a double on the first against Alex Christlo, Mark ‘admiral’ Shelvey and Peter ‘miraculous’ Morales but were then 4 – 7 down after six. This became 7 all a couple of ends later, but then Peter’s trio with Mark in fine form, won eight of the next nine ends to lead 19 – 8 and have the opposition on the ropes and chasing the smelling salts. Owen’s team then responded with a couple of doubles, but the glory went to team Morales at 23 – 12.
Coach’s Corner No 1
The Coach’s Corner will hopefully generate a little discussion and maybe improvement in our game of lawn bowls. As a starting point to get us under way, here is the “role of the lead“ as defined by the official Bowls Australia 2011 Club Coach Manual.
Lead
In team games, places the mat at the discretion of the skip.
Delivers the jack as close as possible, to a distance determined by the skip.
Plays draw shots close to the jack to lay a good foundation for the development of the head.
A lead should practise the art of delivering the jack and try to perfect the basic shot of the game, ‘the draw shot’.
