Dramatic Win to Russell Knight

The semi finals of the Senior Singles were played on Wednesday 21st November.  From the bottom half of the draw Owen Williams was up against Noel Fraser.  Noel got away well with a maximum four shots.  However, after 4 ends the score was close at 6-5 to Noel.  Noel then began to pull away, adding another two maximum scores to lead 19-5 after 10 ends.  Over the next 5 ends Owen staged a come back by scoring 8-1 to close the gap to 20-13 shots.  From here to the finish Owen only won 1 ends and Noel continued to a win of 31-15 in 24 ends.

In the other semi final Robin Staples played Russell Knight.  Russell raced away to a 7 shot lead over the first 3 ends.   Over the next 12 ends Robin struggled to get back on even terms gradually shaving Russell’s lead until at 15 ends the score was level at 13 shots all.  Russell responded immediately to score 10 shots to Robin’s 2 shots over the next 9 ends and lead comfortably 23-15 at 24 ends.   Another turn of the tide saw Robin win the next 6 ends and level the score at 23 shots.  Two shots to Russell on the next end followed a 4 and 1 to Robin had the score Robin 28 Russell 25.  Russell’s response was immediate and he won the next three ends to lead 30-28.  End 37 and Russell held a winning 2 shots only to be denied when Robin drew to within an inch of the jack, 30-29 to Russell. It was Robin’s turn to next hold a winning two shots only to be thwarted by an “on” shot by Russell which split the head with Robin taking one shot and the game at 30 shots all.

After four deliveries Russell held shot.  Robin’s next bowl trailed the jack a few inches to give him 2 shots.  No change after Russell’s next bowl and Robin used his last bowl to cover the back of the green.  All down to the last bowl on the 39th end.  A beauty, Russell right on target, splitting Robin’s shots and trailing the jack for a well deserved one shot victory 31-30.

The Final is scheduled for next Wednesday and should be an excellent match between Russell and Noel.
