Wet Weekend

The weekend of the 16/17th March was somewhat wet, great for the gardens but not so good for bowls.  The weekend started with a meeting in which the Bowral Bowling Club Men’s Committee  gave an update of the years activites to bowls members.  President Gordon Lewis addressed the meeting and explained how the contribution from the Mens section for green maintenance was not achievable.  The Mens committee had approached the Board and obtained a reduction for a year and a half to allow the Mens section to establish themselves and have some reserves of cash.  Vice President Dugald Braithwaite explained how he would like to see a return to old traditions.  A booklet of the year’s activities,  extra prize money for Championship winners, no green fees for finals and Pennants winners total expenses paid.  He added that these changes would also benifit non elite players (his words not mine) as three minor championships would benifit from more prize money as would lower grade pennant winners.  As all these “traditions’ cost money, which was the reason they were modified, it is good that Dugald is in charge off raising money through sponsorship.  Carl Spilker addressed the meeting and explained the plan for a major event called the Hulk which will bring the very best State and International players to Bowral.  He has already done a great amount of work on this project and I am sure the club wish him well.

The Pennants was cancelled in the afternoon due to the inclement weather.  Looking at the Zone results no games were played in grade 2, therefore the ladder remains as per last week.  In the Grade 7 the only match played was Bargo and Picton.  Bargo won 64-43 and       9-1.  With two easy wins it looks like Bargo will be the team to beat in grade 7.  Please note the abandoned round two of the pennants will be played on Sunday the 31st March 2019.  Teams for this game and round three are posted on the pennants page.

Sunday morning the Club Championship Singles semi finals were held, again in very unpleasant weather.  One match was completed with Dugald Braithwaite winning 31-13 against Dennis Beatty.  Both players played terrific bowls with Dugald the better bowler on the day.  Winning 18 ends to Dennis’s 9 he gradually built the lead to a winning margin.  Next Sunday Dugald will be at Austral for the Zone Singles Semi final and we wish him well.  The other match between Jim Neely and Oscar Whalin is unfinished with the score 26-20 when the rain prevented further play.  Oscar is holding his own against last years Champion,  After 15 ends Oscar lead 16-10.  Jim then staged a come back and by end 22 was one shot behind at 19-20.  Jim then won the next 3 ends, taking 7 shots to lead 26-20 which will be the score when they resume play.

I have posted the Zone 5 Inter Zone Training teams below as you will see the Mick Armstrong from Bowral has been rewarded for his runner’s up result in the Zone Pairs with a spot in the team.
