Bowral have a long uphill struggle in Pennants

While not a total disaster, pennant results over the weekend of the 30/31st March were disappointing.  Just two wins to four loses.

On Saturday the Grade 2 side were away to Blacktown Workers.  This resulted in a narrow win to the Workers by two shots, 59-57.  Bowral won two rinks making the score Workers 8 Bowral 2.  Bowral teams do not have the skips name listed on the Zone 5 web site so I only have the scores and not the winning skips.

Great  news was that the Bowral 73 had a terrific win over the front running Bargo team.  Playing at home and maximising the advantage of the knowledge of the excellent synthetic green Bowral won 69-53 with a 9-1 points win.  Mick Flynn’s team had a 28-18 win with Joel Hunt being the standout player.  Dan Ticehurst team won 25-11 and Clive Neutze lost 16-24.  A moral boosting win for the Bowral team.

The Bowral 732 team was away to Camden.  This match resulted in a three shot win to Camden by 60-57 with the points going 9-1 to Camden.  Bob Edwards and team lost 24-18 and Don Chapman team lost 26-11.  The win by the Staples team, 28-11 was insufficient to close the gap.

Sunday 31st March was the date for the round two matches which had been rained off previously.  The day started in disarray for the Bowral sides who were all playing at home.  One of the grade 2 skips failed to appear and a lead in the grade 732 gave insufficient notice for a substitute to be found.  Frantic phoning enlisted the help of Eric Willacy  who argreed to play at very short notice.

Bowral grade 2  had there first win of the season against Glenbrook winning 51-49 and scoring 9 points to 1.   Mick Armstrong ‘s team won 16-12,  Josh Woodcock’s team won 18-14 and substitute skipper Ashley Lewis and team lost 17-23.

The Bowral 72 team came  so close to a win against Camden.  They lead by one shot with an end to go.  Unfortunately a failure to get bowls in the head on the last end allowed Camden to score 4 shots and run out winners by 3 shots.  Dan Ticehurst’s team won 22-20, Clive Neutze had a 20-17 win and Mick Flynn a 23-15 loss.  A win would have lifted the side into the middle of the pack, but unfortunately it was not to be.

The Bowral 732 had their second loss of the weekend, going down to grade front runners Campbelltown by 9 shots and a 9-1 against score.  This result was not helped by losing two top players at the last minute to the grade 2 team due to players not turning up.  This unsettled the teams and Don Chapman was forced to play 3 players against 4 which is almost impossible to overcome.  The snail paced greens might have been the grade 2 teams secret weapon against Glenbrook, but  some of the older 7s players were finding it hard to bowl end to end.  Despite all the problems Bob Edwards had a good two shot win 15-13.  Don Chapman came back from a 8-2 deficit to 17-22.  A good effort with only three players.  The Staples team having lost a player to the grade 2 failed to fire at all and crashed to a 17-11 loss.

Ladder results after 4 rounds in Grade 2 has Blacktown Workers on 35 points, Followed by Austral 22, Glenbrook and Wallacia both on 21.5 and Bowral on12.  in the grade7 section 3  Campelltown have a comfortable lead after four wins with 37 points, Bargo follow on 21.  After two weekend losses Bowral 732  are on 20, Camden 18 and Bowral 73 have the same score as Picton, 12 shots.
