The weekend of 13/14th July can only be described as bitter. However, competition at Bowral Bowling Club continued.
Saturday saw the remaining semi final of the Club Minor Singles played. Carl Spilker up against Brian Porter. In a minor gale and low temperatures Carl won the match 31-24. A great effort by Brian having recently reurned from illness to put up a great fight. After 7 ends Brian led 8-3 and continued to lead through the 16th end with a 14-10 score. As with all matches a swing took place and Carl won the next 6 ends to take the lead 21-14. Brian won 6 of the next 10 end but the 4 that Carl won were with multiples and thus he came out winner 31-24.
The weather was not conducive to social bowls but still a hardy six players ventured out onto the greens. Ted McFee, John Cummings and Peter Watson shivered against Richard Denman, Rick Reynolds and the ever hardy Gordon Lewis.(I bet he was in shirt sleeves). Sad to report that the players capitulated after 14 ends with the Watson team leading 20-14. Well done these players.
With the weather no more clement on Sunday Carl retook to the greens to play the Minor Singles final against Bob Crowley. Result was a win to Carl by 31-24. I watched the first few ends and was of the impression that with both players putting down some excellent bowls it would be Carl’s consistency which would be the deciding factor. Carl has had a rapid rise to have firmly established himself in the grade 2 team, so he would have been considered favourite. However Bob has played some excellent matches and his results can only point to greater things ahead. Well done Carl, a well deserved Minor Singles Championship.
